"My wish is to stay always like this,
living quietly in a corner of nature."

The three babies (called "eyases") were 1 week old on Saturday. Even Mom is having a hard time now keeping them under cover because they are growing so fast. The fourth egg did not hatch.

MURPHY GETS TO BE A DAD
Credit to World Bird Sanctuary's Facebook page
|
|
This is 31-year-old Murphy, the adult eagle. He has lived at World Bird Sanctuary for almost his whole life. He is sort of a celebrity right now. You may have heard about him.
It’s a good story.
Murphy can’t be released because he can’t fly. He has never had a mate.
This year he decided he wanted a baby so he found a rock, made a nest and incubated the rock all by himself.
But look what happened! The Sanctuary received this little eaglet when its nest was destroyed. It’s a couple of weeks old. So they decided to try to let Murphy raise the eaglet. They removed the rock and put the little guy in his enclosure with him. They have bonded!
And Murphy has started feeding it! The baby will hopefully be able to be released this summer.

The Beauty and Biology of Egg Color
by Pat Leonard
Fish do it. Frogs do it. Even insects lay eggs with color. But birds do it best.
Only birds produce eggs in such a wide range of eye-pleasing shades and intricate patterns on the hard surface of their eggs.
Like gems in a jeweler’s window, they vary in base color, how shiny they are, and whether they are covered in Sanskrit-like scrawls or patterns of spots.
But, how does the color get there? What is it made of? Does it benefit the embryo? And, why are some eggs plain white?
Egg pigmentation is surprisingly complex.

THERE'S STILL TIME!
by Gigi Stewart

Spring is here and at Soarin’ Hawk that means baby season! We haven't received any calls for baby raptors yet, so there's still time for you to get involved in helping this year's injured or orphaned young raptors return to the wild.
If you’d like to make a difference in a young bird's life, become a volunteer with us! There are many jobs to choose from. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Gigi Stewart, at gigi.stewart@soarinhawk.org

UPDATE FROM CENTRAL PARK, NY
Flaco, the Eurasian Eagle Owl that escaped from New York City's Central Park Zoo, has taken up residence in the Park's "North Woods," where he is easy to find and has become New York's biggest celebrity with a huge paparazzi following. Here is Flaco finishing up a tasty meal of ratatouille, high up in his favorite tree. (Photographed April 16, 2023)

HAVE A QUESTION FOR SOARIN' HAWK?
|
|
Turkey vultures are nature’s clean-up crew, but did you know they’ve even been used to help find natural gas leaks? The chemical gas companies add to natural gas so humans can smell it is the same chemical emitted by decaying carcasses. Gas companies quickly realized turkey vultures, with their amazing sense of smell, were able to precisely locate gas leaks, often times before a human could!

TO HELP OR NOT TO HELP?
This is a spectacular photo of why we ask that wild babies be left alone in most cases. This young great horned owl is climbing the tree to give flight another go.
While our first instinct might be to help, what these young ones really need is space to learn. An owl’s strong talons help them with far more than catching food! They have the ability to scale a tree to safety if their first flights are unsuccessful, which they usually are.
So, if you are fortunate enough to have an owl family in your yard, take the time to keep the area around their tree clear for the parents to allow the chicks to learn properly, and intervene safely when necessary. If you can't tell whether the youngster needs help or not, please call us before interfering.

When We Were Birds
by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo
This month's book recommendation is a coming-of-age story of mysticism and synchronicity, in which two very different lives from very different places intersect (by chance?) and weave a tale about the power of embracing life, love, belief, destiny, and the soul's finding its place in the universe.
Highly recommended.
