The CORE Carnival - A Day to Celebrate in Kensington!
This past Saturday, April 22nd it was time to celebrate!! On a warm and sunny afternoon, several hundred guests including Kensington community members, friends of Esperanza Health Center (EHC), and many others came together for our CORE Carnival. With an entire block of H Street in Kensington closed to traffic, the event included tours of our new community wellness center, The CORE, along with music, food including a taco truck, games and crafts for kids, raffles with prizes, and lots of fun for all. Individuals who shared remarks during the event's Opening Ceremony were: Juan Perez, EHC's Chief Operations Officer, who served as Master of Ceremonies; State Senator Christine Tartaglione (PA-2); City Councilmember Quetcy Lozada (District 7); Debra Ortiz-Vasquez, Director of Community Health and Wellness; Susan Post, EHC's Chief Executive Officer, and Patrice Rogers and Comfort Bowens, members of our Kensington community who serve on our CORE Action Team. Special thanks to our friends at The Simple Way, Mural Arts Philadelphia, Philly Youth Basketball and McPherson Square Library for their partnership in making the Carnival such a wonderful event. Said Susan Post: "It was a very exciting and encouraging day! We are grateful for the Community Health and Wellness Department, the many volunteers and many staff who worked to make this an exciting and successful event."
Community Health and Wellness Updates
New Community Health Promoters Graduate, FamilyFit Concludes New Class
We're thankful for two programs led by our Department of Community Health and Wellness that just concluded, both of which were held in our new CORE facility!

Community Health Promoter Program: Congratulations to our Spring 2023 cohort of Community Health Promoter graduates (photo above)!! We had 21 people complete this Spanish-language CHP class, which took place in our new CORE building in Kensington. Graduates learned about a variety of health topics pertaining to physical, mental/ emotional, relational, and spiritual health, and developed tools and skills for teaching others about health and promoting health in their spheres of influence. CHP grads, we are so proud of you and can't wait to see all that you accomplish!!
FamilyFit: On April 11th, a group of families (photo above) successfully completed our FamilyFit program! FamilyFit is an eight-week program created several years ago through a partnership of our Behavioral Health and Community Health and Wellness teams, and is designed to improve health, fitness, and overall well-being in a family-friendly and supportive environment. During the program, families met at our new CORE building to spend quality time together while getting fit and having fun! In addition to nutrition education and behavioral health topics, such as how to reduce stress, FamilyFit includes fitness activities such as Zumba, yoga, kickboxing, taekwondo and more. We also partnered with the Nourish nutrition education program of New Kensington Community Development Corporation. Last month, FamilyFit was featured in an article in the Kensington Voice, which goes more in depth about the benefits of having this program in our community. We are grateful for everyone that was involved in making this happen and the families who participated!
