September!
I love the fall. Cool mornings, crisp air, and the leaves turning a rainbow of colors.
Signs that winter is right around the corner and your bees better be ready. Surplus honey should be off, while making sure you haven't taken too much. Any medications should have been applied and finished, or nearly so. Someone recently told me, "If my colonies have food, are healthy, and strong in numbers, I don't lose bees." She raises a good point.
Do your colonies have food? Are they healthy? Are they strong?
This month we will have a very interesting webinar with help from Dr. Vaughn Bryant. Dr. Bryant is the go-to person for testing honey. Whether it be to prove honey has been imported from a foreign country, or people like me that want to know if what my girls made is sourwood or some other honey.
Join us on September 10 at 6:00 pm eastern to discuss the art of honey testing and how it can benefit you. As always, it is free but advanced registration is required. See the information below.
We have exciting news. After months of planning and hard work, we are moving Ruhl Bee Supply, our newest division, to their new location in Wilsonville, OR on September 14th. Unfortunately, to complete the final stages of the relocation, we must close Ruhl's current retail store from September 7-12. During this time we will be setting up the new showroom and putting the final touches on the place. Rest assured it will be the same great people that you have gotten to know over the years and we look forward to continue helping our loyal customers.
Shipping
operations for Brushy Mountain Bee Farm orders will begin at the end of the month from our new Wilsonville, OR location. The new facility is much larger than Ruhl's current location and will allow for much more inventory, including Brushy's complete product line. Given the new location just outside of Portland OR shipping times and costs to the west coast will be greatly reduced.
We very much look forward to serving you as Ruhl Bee Supply, a division of Brushy Mountain Bee Farm.
Cheers,
Shane

Beginner's Guide
One of the main jobs as beekeepers is to provide proper ventilation when needed so the inside of the hive will have the optimum environment for the bees.
Ventilation in the winter helps in deterring one of the hives most dangerous problems in the winter; moisture.
|
Back to the Basics
Honey bees are susceptible to a range of pests and diseases that can easily devastate a honey bee colony if not monitored and properly treated. Weak, unhealthy colonies are the most vulnerable and least likely to recover.

Candy's Corner
After roughly two weeks I made it back into my hive. The "extra" queen did not make it. I felt she didn't have a chance when I closed the hive up the previous visit so I didn't make getting back into my hive top priority.
But that anger was NOTHING compared to the day...

This is the Year for New Bee-ginnings. We know that many new beekeepers, who are starting their first hive(s), need extra resources to help them get started. We want to be able to supply you with the best resources and provide the best information throughout your beekeeping experience. Please visit our Bee Educated section, the Bee Farm Blog, and our YouTube Channel for helpful tips. We also know what works for one beekeeper might not work for another; therefore, we have organized groups on Facebook and Google+ where beekeepers may post their questions, comments, and experiences.

Wed September 10th, 2015 from 6:00pm- 7:00pm EDT
More and more honey labeling is being scrutinized, and this is a good thing. States are adopting standards which must be met in order to label varietal honeys. There is also a great interest among beekeepers to know what type of honey the bees have produced. I can say first hand, I thought I knew what type of honey I had but after having it tested by Dr. Vaughn Bryant, I was proved wrong. Join us for a discussion of how Dr. Bryant determines the nectar sources, how you as beekeepers can use that information to better market to the customer, and be compliant with labeling standards.
