Starting over is never easy. Chris, a veteran, knew this and chose to start over anyway, because fleeing with his son to Florida seemed infinitely better than staying in an abusive situation. Although it was a difficult choice, he and his son temporarily moved into a friend’s house to get their bearings and begin their lives in a new place. The two didn’t stay there long, however—Chris was again faced with a difficult choice when his friend’s partner began to exhibit some of the same abusive and violent tendencies as his ex. Instead of allowing his son to stay in that environment, Chris and his son began living out of a local hotel. It was there that they learned about Family Promise of Southeast Florida and our mission, and Chris called us.
After reaching out to us, Chris was fully vetted and agreed to our guidelines and covenants. A determined man, he was accepted to our Road to Independence program in early September and graduated in less than sixty days! During his time in our program, Chris and his son received mental health counseling, case management services, and the resources to create a realistic budgeting plan. Eventually he was able to save up enough money to pay for first, last, and security on an apartment of his own during his time with us (and all without organizational financial assistance!).
We are proud to have assisted Chris in finding his new apartment, which he shares with his son. He has been able to furnish it and make it feel like a real home with furniture, kitchenware, and other small touches provided by Family Promise.
