Saturday, August 12

Dear {First Name}

I hope this message finds you and your family well. As your Representative, it is my pleasure to share with you some exciting updates on the work being done here in the State of Illinois. There have been significant developments that I am thrilled to share with you.

I am honored to announce that this Sunday, August 13th, I will be participating in the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Task Force on Military and Veterans Affairs in Indianapolis, Indiana. This task force, co-chaired by Rep. Tina Orwall of Washington and Sen. Bryce Reeves of Virginia, is a collaborative effort across states aimed at addressing crucial issues affecting military-community relations and the well-being of service members, Veterans, and their families across the nation.

This appointment underscores my commitment to Veterans and their rights, as well as my track record of advocacy for their well-being. The task force meeting will focus on a range of critical topics, from suicide prevention policy initiatives to improving access to justice for military families.

On August 7th, we celebrated Purple Heart Day, honoring the nearly 2 million Veterans who have been wounded or lost their lives while serving our country. This is a day to express gratitude and remember the sacrifices made by these brave individuals. We must never forget their dedication and commitment to our nation.

Additionally, August 10th marked the U.S. Department of Defense's birthday. Established in 1949, the DoD has played a vital role in safeguarding our nation's security. Let us take a moment to appreciate their contributions to our safety and freedom.

August also brings with it Agent Orange Awareness Day, observed on Thursday. While the Vietnam War may be over, the struggles faced by many Vietnam Veterans continue due to Agent Orange exposure. This toxic substance has affected thousands of veterans and their families. It is essential that we recognize their sacrifices and support their ongoing fight for justice and health.

Governor Pritzker Establishes Farm to Foodbank Program

Last week, Governor Pritzker signed HB2879 into law, establishing the permanent Illinois Farm to Food Bank Program within the Department of Human Services.

The Farm to Food Bank Program seeks to reduce excess food waste and increase the availability of nutritious food at Illinois food banks through centralized donation program for farmers.

The bill establishes grants for improved food storage, creates an advisory council of experts and stakeholders, and facilitates relationship building between the agriculture industry and food banks.

If you or someone you know is experiencing food insecurity, visit the Northern Illinois Food Bank or the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry for resources and support.
