A note from Anne Meisner, Patient Services Manager
|
The Ellie Fund holds a special place in my heart. At the age of 28, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a 2 ½-year-old and a 3-week-old at the time. Overwhelmed and anxious, I had no idea how I was going to manage all of it. How was I going to go through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and still care for my 2 small children? One of my goals throughout treatment was to try and keep life as normal as possible for my family. Thankfully, I found the Ellie Fund. One phone call and a quick application later, I was given more than just housekeeping, delivered meals and grocery gift cards. I was given hope.
Even though I had a great network of support, including an amazing husband, wonderful friends and loving family, it was hard to keep asking those people for help. The Ellie Fund became that someone I could rely on for the help I needed without having to feel guilty asking for it. They were the friend I never met and the support I so desperately needed during a difficult time.
After all of my treatment was finished, I wanted to find a way to give back to the organization that gave me so much. I started volunteering and later joined the Board of Directors. I now have the best job in the world as the Ellie Fund's Patient Services Manager. Every day, I get to help those women, men and families who find themselves in the same position I was in 11 years ago. Not only do I get to provide essential support services such as nutritional and grocery assistance, transportation assistance, housekeeping, prepared and delivered meals and childcare reimbursement, but I get to give them so much more - hope.
Being a young woman going through breast cancer was hard. Being a young mother going through it was probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to go through in my life. This spring we will have a special Mother's Day fundraiser. I invite you to help us continue to provide support, critical services and hope to the hundreds of patients we assist each year by making a donation in honor of a special mother or woman in your life.
Thank you,
Anne Meisner

"The Ellie Fund allowed me to continue to do what I needed to do to get into a better place. They helped to minimize the impact of my diagnosis and treatment on my daughter so that she could have as much of a normal life as possible while I was going through everything."
