Shalom from TBD Religious School

Shabbat newsletter compiled by Gal Kessler Rohs, Education Director
The past few days, and next few, have been and will be exciting times at TBD! President Mickey Adelman officially welcomed Cantor Orly Campbell to TBD as our Cantor, Rachel Gross and Stuart Altman will be having an aufruf this evening for their wedding on Sunday, and Elle Rohs will be Bat Mitzvahed on Saturday. Exciting times!

Here are some words from Elle, welcoming you to her simcha:

Shalom!

My name is Elle Sheila Rohs. I am 12 years old, going into 8th grade at La Canada High School. My hobbies include swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling. I love all animals, especially my two cats, my best friends’ dog Bagel, and my neighbor’s dog Tutu. I also love swimming with dolphins in Eilat.

With the service leadership of Rabbi Lachtman and Cantor Doug Cotler, I will be reaching my Bat Mitzvah milestone on August 17th, 2019, at Temple Beth David. I will also lead Erev Shabbat services this evening, with the guidance of our Rabbi, Cantor Judy Sofer, and Leeav Sofer.

Earlier this year, my doctors informed me I might need surgery. I was scared. I put myself in the shoes of other children who were undergoing surgery. I wanted to talk with them in hospitals to make them happy. Since I am too young to visit hospitals, for my mitzvah project, I am donating stuffed animals to animal shelters, orphanages, and hospitals to make children and animals happy.

When you next come to TBD, please consider adding a new plushy to the collection. I will then allocate those donations to Vista Del Mar, Ronald McDonald House, Door of Hope and San Gabriel Humane Society. I am also donating my big plush horse I have had since an early age, to the collection of toys at the entrance of TBD, so that children entering our temple will feel Jewishly Warm and Relevant.

This continued learning experience would not be possible without the guidance of my teachers: Rabbi Lachtman, Cantor Cotler, Cantor Schwartz, Sondra Dreshner, my teachers at TBD religious school, my middle school Principal Dr. Jarret Gold , family and friends.

Much has influenced me to become a Bat Mitzvah: my love for Israel, my upbringing, my home, my temple and other synagogues, and our Jewish Federation. Above all though, TBD is the place I chose to become a Daughter of the Commandments.

Iwould like to thank my family, my parents, Oma and Opa , and especially my Savta and Saba, Dr. Maggie and Mottie Kessler, for making my dream come true. My non blood related family who have also brought me to this decision are: Ellen and Rabbi Lachtman (my grandparents in America), Lidia Camoosa (my second mother), Jenna Yoshkovitz (my older sister), Javi Cornejo (my best friend and twin), the Metivier family , and my Jewish friends who BeSha’a Tova, share and shared this Jewish milestone too: Meital Negrin, Rachel Dubin, Hannah Stein, Cailin Schreir, Carmel Randolf and Sydney Young.

I look forward to welcoming my TBD family and friends to celebrate this milestone with me!

Shabbat Shalom,
Elle Rohs

Religious School Registration is underway
Our first day back will be September 8th, 2019 #cantwait
Application and registration for our Religious School is underway! Our first day back will be September 8th, 2019, where we will focus on friendship making, community building, and replenishing ourselves towards the Jewish High Holy Days.

Our school is located in Temple City, we are under the umbrella of the Union for Reform Judaism, and partner with the Jewish Federation of San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. We are a diverse and caring community where students are inspired to develop a love of Judaism in its many forms.

Guided by the values of Hesed (kindness), K’dushah (holiness), Tsedakah (justice/charity), and Limmud (learning), our purpose is to nourish the hearts, souls, and minds of our students. Our educational programs and staff aspire to provide a foundation for students to comfortably participate in all aspects of Jewish life.

Registration forms can be found on our website or by clicking here .
Torah Portion this week
Parashat Vaetchanan / ואתחנן
Vaetchanan / ואתחנן is next read in the Diaspora on 17 August 2019. Parashat  Vaetchanan  is the 45th weekly  Torah portion  in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading.

In this Torah portion,   Moses  stresses to the Israelites the importance of keeping God’s commandments when they enter the  Land  of Israel. Moses repeats the Ten Commandments and utters the Shema and Ve’ahavta  prayers . Here's a throw back to when Alice and DJ Kurs taught us the Shema in sign language.
