At this Sunday's Mass, we are honoring Fr Jim Ferry, on the occasion of his death anniversary, which is on January 23.
Fr. Ferry was the founding father of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal at St Antoninus Church (1975). This was after the Dominicans, who originally founded St Antoninus Church in 1875, and served the parish for 100 years, moved out. Fr Ferry then came and "re-founded" St Antoninus as a vibrant Catholic Charismatic church, which it still is today.
This Sunday, we will remember Fr Jim Ferry at our Holy Mass in a very special way, with great love and gratitude.

We have begun our 2025 Triple Jubilee Year in the parish: first, we are celebrating the Jubilee of the Universal Catholic Church called “The Jubilee of Pilgrims of Hope”, and secondly, by God’s providence, it happens that this year our parish is celebrating our 150th Anniversary of founding as a parish (1875) and the 50th anniversary of being re-founded as a charismatic parish (1975).
What an amazing triple portion of grace for all of us at St. Antoninus!
So what is a Jubilee Year?
|
Let us begin with the definition of a Jubilee Year based on the Scriptures and our Church history:
- A Jubilee year is holy year of the forgiveness of sin, conversion and joyful celebration.
- The word “jubilee” comes from the Hebrew word yobel, which refers to the ram’s horn used to announce a jubilee in the Old Testament.
|
Old Testament Origins
God told Moses that every fiftieth year was to be set aside for the return of absent members to their households, the restoration of land to its owners, the release of Hebrew slaves and the forgiveness of debts.
This fiftieth year you shall make sacred by proclaiming liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when every one of you shall return to his own property, every one to his own family estate. (Lev. 25:10)
Like the sabbath, which took place on the seventh day of each week, the jubilee was a time for the Israelites to re-establish a proper relationship with God and with one another.
| |
Tradition continues in Christianity
Pope Boniface VIII proclaimed the first Christian jubilee in A.D. 1300, granting the full remission of sin for those who confessed their sins and made a pilgrimage to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
The Church first celebrated jubilee years every 100 years. This was eventually shortened to every 50 years and then every 25 years.

Hallmarks of the Universal Jubilee Year
Jubilee Indulgence:
Special graces for the forgiveness of sins are made available during the Jubilee Year.
The faithful may obtain a plenary indulgence – remission of all temporal punishment (time in Purgatory) for sin– by meeting the normal conditions (confession, Holy Communion, prayer for the pope’s intentions, and no attachment to sin) and by participating in one of the following activities:
- Pilgrimages: The four major basilicas in Rome are the main pilgrimage destinations, but pilgrims may also go to the Holy Land, their diocesan cathedral or other officially designated locations. (See below list of designated locations in the Archdiocese ofNewark.)
- Pious visits to sacred places: At these locations, the faithful are to engage in Eucharistic adoration and meditation, among other spiritual practices.
- Works of mercy and penance: The faithful are to perform the spiritual or corporal works of mercy or carry out works of penance, such as abstaining from meat on Fridays.
|
Holy Doors
Pope Francis has opened the Holy Doors of the four main churches (called “major basilicas”) in Rome: St. Peter’s Basilica, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. Passing through the holy doors symbolizes the pilgrim’s journey of conversion.
We do not have to travel to Rome for the indulgence of a pilgrimage and the Holy Door.
In the Archdiocese of Newark, Catholics can receive a plenary indulgence by visiting one of four designated Holy Door pilgrimage churches during the Jubilee Year:
- The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark
- Saint Helen in Westfield,
- Saint Joseph of the Palisades in West New York
- Saint Pius X in Old Tappan.
The Jubilee Indulgence can also be granted by undertaking spiritual works of mercy and penance outlined in the Archdiocese’s guidelines Here

A letter from Fr Joseph:
Dear brothers and sisters :
As mentioned above, St. Antoninus Church is holding our own 2025 Jubilee celebration at the same time as the "Pilgrims of Hope" Jubilee.
This means that we are taking part in the broader Catholic Church's special year of grace and reflection, themed "Pilgrims of Hope," while also adding our own unique local elements and celebrations to mark this significant time of St Antoninus Church. By God's providence our parish celebrations will draw deeply from the rich message of the 2025 Jubilee year of the Universal Catholic Church our Mother.
It is important to understand that this Jubilee celebration is not just a one or two day event, but a whole year of opportunities for graces of forgiveness, reconciliation, healing and profound new freedom in Christ, and more.
St Antoninus ushered in our Parish Jubilee Year on the eve of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (January 1st, 2025). At that time we also began a 33 Day pilgrimage which will lead up to our consecration to Jesus through Mary on Sunday, Feb 2 - the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus.
I invite you all to open your hearts to the Lord's extravagant Jubilee graces. The Jubilee celebration is mainly about deepening our relationship with God and with one another. It is a time of great reconciliation and joy.
A Happy and Holy Jubilee Year to you and your family!
P. S. Please come to the town call meeting immediately following 10 am Mass tomorrow. We will be exploring ideas together on how to make this a most blessed and holy Jubilee for uall s in the parish.
In Jesus thru Mary & St Joseph,
Fr Joseph

Please join us at this gathering. We will have a quick bite to eat and start the meeting immediately.
Fr Joseph is asking everyone to attend! Praise God!

PRAYER OF ENTRUSTMENT TO MARY, MOTHER OF GOD
Most Blessed Mary, Mother of God, you are the Immaculate One, through whom shines the fullness of grace.
Here, then, we kneel, your sons and daughters of St Antoninus Church, seeking refuge in your motherly love and protection.
Today we entrust to you St Antoninus Chuch and the future that awaits our parish. We consecrate our hearts to Jesus through your Immaculate Heart.
We consecrate all the works, joys and sacrifices of the people of this Church to Jesus, especially those of our pastor, Fr Joseph, on whom we invoke your prayerful favor and blessing.
We ask you to guide all of us into always following God’s will for us as parish and in each of our lives.
We come to you most earnestly as a parish family to ask for your guidance in all the preparations for the upcoming 150th Anniversary of St Antoninus Church and the 50th Anniversary of the Charismatic Renewal in this parish.
We thank you for always being with us, especially as you lovingly stand by the altar, with Jesus and all the angels and saints, at each celebration of Holy Mass at St Antoninus Church.
We enthrone you as the Patroness and Mother in this Church and in our hearts. Mary, Mother of God, and our Mother, we love you!
