What are the College & Career Academies of Proviso West?
|
Beginning in the fall of 2019, The College & Career Academies of Proviso West will prepare students to confidently pursue the post-secondary training and career path of their choosing in a globally competitive society. Driven by student interest and workforce projections, our Academies provide access to authentic, hands-on learning experiences that cultivate social and emotional well-being through teamwork, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.
Within our three College & Career Academies, all students choose a program of study comprised of academically rigorous core subjects and specialized courses in their career area of interest. Students will progress through their Academy with peers who share similar interests and a common team of teachers, which builds camaraderie and a culture of belonging.
In summary, The College & Career Academies of Proviso West provide students access to:
- Relevant and rigorous curriculum and instruction
- Increased community and business engagement
- Opportunities for professional certifications
- 21st century skills such as leadership, civic literacy, social responsibility, global and cultural awareness, communication, problem solving, and technological literacy
- Opportunities to form closer relationships with teachers and advisors
- Practical work experience through job shadowing and internships
- Opportunities to learn in the context of an industry or subject theme
- Preparation for career success through both formal education and life experience

Did you know...
More than 95 percent of high school students with a B average
or better their freshman year graduate from high school
Only students who enter college with a high school GPA of 3.0 or above have a greater than 50 percent chance of earning a four year college degree within six years of graduating high school.
High school GPA, not test scores, is the best predictor of college graduation.
Strong grades are a sign that students are able to meet academic challenges and are developing the skills they need to handle new academic challenges in the future.

Starting at the Foundation with Freshman Success Academy
|
The transition to high school can be challenging! The Freshman Success Academy (FSA) is the first step in a Panther's Academy journey at Proviso West. The FSA fosters a successful transition to high school through a variety of academically rigorous and socially nurturing learning opportunities that develops a student’s sense of agency. The academic and social-emotional learning that occurs during freshman year provides the necessary knowledge base and skills required to thrive in high school and beyond. All freshmen are assigned a Freshman Success Coach
What is the benefit of the Freshman Success Academy ?
- Promoting academic excellence and personal achievement through a challenging academic curriculum and character development activities;
- Creating a positive culture and a safe and secure environment;
- Providing educational opportunities that maximize student potential;
- Guiding students to make informed decisions about career opportunities by exposing them to a variety of college and career pathways
- Establishing a sense of pride about self, others and community;
- Developing the tools necessary for students to successfully transition to tenth grade and beyond;
- Preparing students to be life-long learners.

Hands-On Learning at the 1st Annual Career Expo

Prior to Academy selection, PWHS students had the opportunity to speak to over 60 industry experts showcasing a variety of careers at the Academy Career Expo in October!

Enrollment information coming to your mailbox soon!
This fall, students participated in career exploration activities at Proviso West in preparation for declaring their College & Career Academy during the course enrollment process. Families will soon receive a letter that details the courses selected and Academy the student declared. Details regarding the process for requesting changes will be included in the letter.

Announcing the Advanced Manufacturing program of study at Proviso West

conducted by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, by 2025, an estimated 3.5 million jobs will be created in the manufacturing industry, but 2 million of those positions are expected to go unfulfilled due to a gap in skilled labor."
