Lets go to Mexico this Spring Break!

The International Engagement in Mexico study abroad program is a one-of-a-kind education abroad program at Michigan State University. During spring break, each program will visit one of the four cities in Mexico (Huatulco, Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas). While there, students volunteer at organizations that care for vulnerable communities. Although the program emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community, students quickly learn that civic engagement is mutually beneficial because they receive much more than they can give. Through a powerful combination of classroom instruction, international volunteer work, and facilitated group discussions, our program allows students to learn core concepts through action.

Course: SSC 399 or SSC490

Number of credits: 3

Prior to spring break class meets on January 22nd, February 5th, 19th, and 26th

Post-travel class meets on March 19th and April 16th

Travel days:      Huatulco and Oaxaca – March 3rd – 11th & May after Finals!

                             Puebla and Chiapas – March 4th – 12th

What are “Food for Thought: Cultural Community Dinners?”

Food for Thought: Cultural Community Dinners are community rebuilding spaces designed for conversation among multicultural and marginalized communities. These gatherings will be opportunities to share delicious meals and spark conversations about important diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) topics.

The concept is simple: we eat together and connect to see each other’s vibrant and complex humanity. Our guest students will be welcomed with warm smiles and open hearts. We will learn how to create and maintain supportive environments where we can eat, rebuild and uplift our communities.

These dinners are a collaboration between the Inclusive Campus Initiative (ICI) – Task Force on “Inclusive Education, Training and Programming” and Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS) and are co-hosted by multicultural and marginalized student organizations.

Why should student orgs want to co-host a dinner?

  • Coalition building with other student orgs!
  • Be a part of a supportive and inclusive community!
  • Discuss important DEIB topics!
  • Utilize the ICI platform to amplify your student org!
  • Share a delicious cultural meal!

Timeline:

  • Deadline for student orgs. to sign-up is Jan. 25.
  • Student orgs. that have been selected will be notified by Jan. 27.
  • Selected student orgs in collaboration with the ICI/REHS team will determine a date for a monthly dinner.
