Exclusive: Biden administration moves to streamline Medicaid, CHIP enrollment

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services aims to make enrolling in government health care programs easier for low-income kids, disabled people and older adults by cutting red tape, according to a proposal announced Wednesday.

The proposed rule, provided first to USA TODAY, takes steps to reduce the paperwork burden often associated with health care by streamlining applications and standardizing policies and requirements across states for Medicaid, Basic Health Programs and the Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP.

Children covered by CHIP would no longer face pre-enrollment waiting periods or lifetime benefit limits under the proposed rule. Automatic consideration for Medicare Savings Programs, as proposed, would make accessing them more simple for low-income seniors and some people with disabilities. And renewals under the health care programs would be limited to once every 12 months.

US clears updated COVID boosters targeting newest variants

The U.S. on Wednesday authorized its first update to COVID-19 vaccines, booster doses that target today’s most common omicron strain. Shots could begin within days.

The move by the Food and Drug Administration tweaks the recipe of shots made by Pfizer and rival Moderna that already have saved millions of lives. The hope is that the modified boosters will blunt yet another winter surge — and help tamp down the BA.5 omicron relative that continues to spread widely.

Polio case in NYC triggers surveillance preparation in Southern Nevada

A case of polio that partially paralyzed a young unvaccinated man in New York Cityhas caused new concerns about an old disease, prompting Southern Nevada to prepare to look for the virus in the community’s wastewater.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Southern Nevada agencies launched wastewater surveillance to anticipate disease trends for the novel coronavirus. Recently they began to use it to detect levels of monkeypox in the community.

AMA 2022 Campaign School

After two years of virtual programming due to the COVID-19 pandemic, AMPAC is excited to announce that the 2022 Campaign Schoo l will be returning in-person September 29 – October 2 at the AMA offices in Washington, DC.

A few spaces are still available but hurry, deadline to register is September 4 (or sooner is maximum capacity is reached)!

Running an effective campaign can be the difference between winning and losing a race. That's why the Campaign School is designed to give you the skills and strategic approach you will need out on the campaign trail. Our team of political experts will teach you everything you need to know to run a successful campaign. Under the direction of our lead trainers, participants will be broken into campaign staff teams to run a simulated congressional campaign using what they've learned during group sessions on strategy, vote targeting, social media, advertising and more.

Attendees include physicians, spouses of physicians, residents and medical students and state medical society staff interested in becoming more involved in politics. Participants range from those attracted to grassroots efforts to those considering becoming a candidate for public office. No matter where you are in the process, you will develop a new understanding of how campaigns are run. As a graduate of the AMPAC program, candidates will rely on you to give them advice on strategy, message, and campaign plans.

Please note the following:

Registration fee is $350 for AMA Member/$1000 for non-AMA members. This fee is waived for AMA residents and students; however, space is limited and the AMPAC Board will review and select four participants from the pool of qualified resident and student applicants.
Faculty, materials, and all meals during the meeting are covered by the AMA. Participants are responsible for their registration fee, travel to/from Washington, DC and hotel accommodations (AMPAC staff will provide you with a list of nearby hotels within walking distance of the AMA offices).
All participants will be required to provide proof of full vaccination and at least one booster for the COVID-19 virus.
