Join GGRWHC on Monday, June 10th, for an exclusive tour of our restored state capitol building with an expert, Michigan Capitol Historian Kerry Chartkoff! If you have not visited the building since its amazing restoration, this is a perfect opportunity. If you have, you will experience a visit unlike any you've had before.
Along the way, Chartkoff will feature the long continuum of women, ranging from the humble to the notable, who have worked under the capitol dome. Meet an 1880s janitress, a state librarian, a staffer from the 1912 delinquent tax department, Sojourner Truth, and state suffragists--for a start! Visit the desk of Grand Rapids' Eva McCall Hamilton, who in 1920 became the first woman to serve in the legislature. Her official portrait hangs in the Senate chambers.
The tour will last approximately two hours, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing. There will be occasional opportunities to sit down, but let us know if you have special needs and we will plan accordingly.
We will be carpooling. Please let us know ASAP whether 1) you will be able to drive and how many passengers you can accommodate; 2) whether you will need a ride; 3) whether you plan to attend but will meet us there. There is free handicapped parking at the Capitol; for everyone else, a parking structure. Cross the street and enter at the front (east) entrance. Do not climb the stairs, but use the ground floor entrances beneath them. At the information desk on your right, ask for our tour.
RSVP and send additional questions and information to info@ggrwhc.org or call (616) 574-7307. [Note that this new GGRWHC telephone number is currently forwarding to a personal voicemail. Please leave your name and a contact number.]
Driving Directions: From I-96: exit east on I-496. Take the Walnut Street exit and proceed north. Turn right on Allegan to the end of the block. The parking structure is on the corner with Capitol Street. |

Please consider helping interview women in our community who have "made a difference." The workshop on June 19th will introduce you to procedures for interviewing and later depositing your work in our collection at the Grand Rapids Public Library. Guided by the Oral History Committee of the GGRWHC, you can practice developing interview questions and rehearsing interview methods, after discussing permissions and appropriate recording devices.
Please pre-register as the workshop will be limited in number. If it fills up, we will plan another in the very near future. Call 616-574-7307 or email info@ggrwhc.org with queries and contact information to reserve a space. More detailed information soon! |
