Exemplary Alternative Education!

How do you know that your alternative education approach is exemplary?
NAEA developed the Exemplary Practices using research and best practice. When you implement the NAEA Exemplary Practices, you can assure your school or program provides quality alternative education. You can share this evidence with the public, authorizing bodies/state department of education, or your district.
Do you want to learn more?
NAEA will be holding three breakout sessions during the October conference. These sessions will be part of the regular session schedule (in contrast to pre-conference workshop in the past), thus included in the cost of conference registration and open to everyone. The NAEA values its Exemplary Practices, and they should be considered the cornerstone to any alternative education program.
The first session, Exemplary Practices 101, which will be immediately following the opening ceremony on the first day of the conference. This session will provide an informative and useful overview of the Exemplary Practices. Whether the attendee is hearing about the NAEA Exemplary Practices for the first time or already knows about them and wants a review, this session will be helpful for all. All 15 practices will be covered and discussed and at the end of the session, the presenters will briefly give an overview of the next session which will be focused on the launch of the model school program.
The second session will be on day two and right after our Keynote speaker session. The second session will provide an overview of the newly developed Model School Program. Information will be shared about how schools can register to be considered for the first cohort of schools. In general, the program is a 3-year program through which NAEA will identify two schools from each NAEA Region to form the first cohort. Professional Development specific to each practice will be provided to identified schools by NAEA Board Members and/or previous Board members who are very familiar with the practices. PD will take place during the first year of the Model Schools Program. Year Two will be considered an implementation year in which the schools/programs will work with their staff and the NAEA to implement the practices and review their effectiveness. The third year will be spent evaluating the implementation, celebrating successes and sharing them with others in the cohort and at the NAEA Conference. The third year will also be used to prepare schools to mentor the next cohort of schools who participate in this model program.
The third session will be a combination of the first two. By offering the sessions each day of the conference, you can fit one into your schedule and still have openings for the other sessions.
We hope you will choose to join us for these sessions and consider applying to be in the first cohort of schools.

Your NAEA Executive Committee in April and the full Board in July traveled to St. Louis. These school people, just like you, traveled to St. Louis and then back home. They stayed at the conference hotel and were out and about in downtown St. Louis, eating at restaurants close to the conference site and seeing the sites.
No one among this group of leaders became ill resulting from travel or the stay in St. Louis.
Marriott is taking extra precautions to assure cleanliness of their properties and safety of guests. Take a look at this video from Marriott's Commitment to Clean!
