C.F. Martin Guitars: Dec 1 & 2

c. 1834 C.F. Martin Guitar
The Exhibit!
Vintage Instruments, Inc. of Philadelphia presents an exhibition of Early C.F. Martin Guitars made from 1834-1870, and instruments that influenced their design, on Friday December 1st and Saturday December 2nd , from 10 am to 5 pm.

The exhibit takes place at the shop, located at: 507 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA.
The Guitars

The exhibit includes 35 early guitars from private collections. The focus of the exhibit are the early C.F. Martin Guitars made in New York city and Nazareth, Pennsylvania from c.1834 until c.1867. In addition, rare examples of early Viennese, French and Spanish guitars dating from the 1770s will also be on display illustrating features of design and engineering that influenced C.F. Martin.

All in the Details
Through a pointed focus on specific design characteristics, the exhibit provides a look at the cross pollination of ideas from other makers, teachers and performers that motivated changes in C.F. Martin's early work. The guitars will be arranged chronologically, to provide a sense of changes in body styles, headstock shapes, and ornamentation through time.
A Close-Up Look
While we can't invite visitors to handle the guitars (sorry!), this is a rare opportunity for an intimate view of these instruments, some of which were included in the exhibit Inventing the American Guitar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2014.
