Exhibition | Archive and Artifact: The Virtual and the Physical

This exhibition celebrates the experimental and influential pedagogy of  The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture by presenting undergraduate Thesis projects completed at the school over the last 50 years.

Curated from materials documented in the Student Work Collection of the School of Architecture Archive, the exhibition includes drawings, produced by hand and by computation, and models of 35 undergraduate Thesis projects completed between 1969 and 2018. These materials are complimented by a preview of the School of Architecture Archive's Digital Access Project, an online database of the Student Work Collection that expands the scope of the exhibition. Visitors will be able to access the database via computer terminals in the gallery. At this time, the database is comprised of over 500 Thesis projects completed between the 1960's through 2003, including nearly 8,500 digitized records.

Gallery Hours
Tuesday-Friday 2-7pm
Saturday and Sunday 12-7pm

This event is free and open to the public.

Current Work | Hiroshi Sugimoto: New Materials

Born in Japan, Sugimoto moved to the US to study photography in 1970; within a few years his work was being shown at the Museum of Modern Art. In the decades since, his photographs have been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Tate Gallery, and many others.  In 2008, he founded design firm  New Material Research Laboratory (NMRL)  with architect Tomoyuki Sakakida. The office has worked with a number of cultural institutions, completing projects such as the lobby of Washington DC's  Hirshhorn Museum  and the atrium garden of New York's  Japan Society Sugimoto has won the Praemium Imperiale Award for Painting and the National Arts Club Medal of Honor in Photography, among many other accolades.

This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural League of New York.  Tickets are free for Cooper Union students and faculty with valid ID, and League members.
Five Thousand Pound Life Conference | Ground Transportation and Climate Change

The Five Thousand Pound Life is the Architectural League of New York's ongoing initiative to rethink our collective future through design in the face of climate change. The current discourse surrounding mobility, the movement of goods, and cities is focused on convenience and mode rather than considering the production of greenhouse gases. This conference will look at radical changes happening in urban transportation through the lens of their potential climate change impacts.

This conference is organized by The Architectural League of New York and co-sponsored by the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture. This project is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and Oldcastle Glass.
Current Work | Neri&Hu: Obsessions

Founded in 2004,  Neri&Hu Design and Research Office  is an interdisciplinary architectural design practice based in Shanghai, with an additional office in London. The firm works internationally in architecture, master planning, interiors, graphic design, and product design. Recently, Neri&Hu has been working on industrial design products for several European and Asian brands, as well as developing its own product line, which has been recognized by I.D.  magazine's annual design review awards, the Red Dot Award, and Perspective Awards, among others.

This lecture is co-sponsored with The Architectural League of New York. Tickets are free for Cooper Union students and faculty with valid ID, and League members.
Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948-1980

Students of the School of Architecture designed and fabricated five models featured in this exhibition currently on view in the 3rd Floor Exhibition Galleries at the Museum of Modern Art. The Project began as an elective class "Modeling Yugoslav Architecture," taught by Matthew Worsnick, 2016-17 MRC Fellow in Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art.

The exhibition was organized by Martino Stierli, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art, and Vladimir Kulic, guest curator, with Anna Kats, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art.
