Anna Walinska and Louise Nevelson were close friends and fellow artists. They both joined NAWA together on April 10, 1952. This connection between the two powerful 20th Century New York artists was stengthened by the later friendship between Nevelson and Anna’s mother, Rosa Newman Walinska. Just as they had welcomed Arshile Gorky, the Walinskas accepted Nevelson as an honorary family member.

Walinska created a number of portraits of Nevelson – including two drawings which are in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. and one in the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art & Life in Berkeley, California.

They exhibited together numerous times, including several under the aegis of NAWA, the Federation of Modern Painters & Sculptors and the Riverside Museum on the Upper West Side. Among the most notable – 1956, Four New York Artists (Ahron Ben Shmuel, Louise Nevelson, Merton Simpson, Anna Walinska) at the Bodley Gallery, New York City.

Posthumously, their work has been shown together at The Jewish Museum, self-portraits by both displayed in Scenes from the Collection, 2019 and the Hudson River Museum Women to the Fore, 2020.
