A huge thank you to Rosie and Freddie, who took time out from their family holiday to carry out a litter pick around the village of Dunster.

Together, they collected lots of small pieces of plastic, paper tissues, cigarette butts, a Polaroid photo, till receipts, ice cream packaging and a tin can. As much of the litter as possible has been recycled, with the remaining items disposed of responsibly.

Rangers and Field Services Update

At this time of year Exmoor Rangers are working closely with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to monitor and reduce the risk of wildfire across Exmoor, particularly during very dry weather when moorland vegetation can ignite and spread quickly.

Rangers help to keep watch on high-risk areas, sharing local knowledge of access routes, habitats and land management, and supporting public messaging around fire prevention.

This includes asking people to:

-Avoid lighting fires or barbecues on or near moorland and woodland.

-Enjoy a picnic instead of using a disposable BBQ

-Never drop cigarettes, dispose of them responsibly

-Take litter home, especially glass bottles, which can focus sunlight and increase the risk of starting a fire

If you spot a fire, call 999 immediately and use the What3Words app to share your location

In the sweltering temperatures we’ve had recently I think we’ve all mentally doffed our caps to anyone working out in the heat.

Our field services team do a brilliant job keeping Exmoor’s 1000km of footpaths and bridleways open, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. Their vegetation paring work is often tough, physical and carried out in challenging conditions, but it makes a real difference to walkers, riders, cyclists and local communities who rely on these routes. From carefully cutting back seasonal growth (and thanks to climate change that vegetation growing window gets ever longer) to helping maintain safe and accessible rights of way- and let’s not forget all the iconic signposts and gates they repair and renew from log sawing to hand painting - we salute their dedication, skill and pride in the landscape.

Pinkery Canal Heritage Open Day

Saturday 18 July

10am - 3pm

Pinkery Canal, one of Exmoor’s most intriguing and mysterious features and the highest canal ever built in England, has puzzled people for years. A new excavation, part of the ‘Exmoor Pioneers Project’ is looking beneath it at the peat and soils sealed below its banks. These hidden layers act like a time capsule, helping Exmoor’s heritage team piece together what Exmoor looked like before the Knight family came to Exmoor and transformed the landscape in the 19th century.
