Rights of way and Field Services news

Our Field Services team are a very busy crew! Alongside our Ranger Team, they look after around 1000km of paths and bridleways, not to mention maintaining and replacing all the locally made gates and fingerposts that point the way along those routes.

Here are just a few projects they have been working on recently....

Cloutsham Splash Bridge Reopens

The replacement of the Cloutsham Splash Bridge at Cloutsham Ford is complete, restoring an important connection for walkers and cyclists in one of Exmoor’s most scenic and well used areas. Although a Somerset Council Highways bridge, situated on a road next to a ford, the bridge provides a vital link between the network of routes through Horner Woods and the path up to Dunkery Hill. Its removal in 2024 for safety reasons, prompted concern from residents and visitors who rely on it for access.

The bridge in progress

The world's longest coastal path is now open in England!

The King Charles III England Coast Path around the entire coast of England officially opened on 19th March 2026.

As part of this route, we were proud to open the Exmoor section back in July 2024, with improvements along a quarter of the length of the 36 mile stretch of the The South West Coast Path so that walkers at popular Devon and Somerset spots such as Hurlstone Point, Cobbler's Park, Lee Abbey, North Hill and Glenthorne could enjoy revived ancient paths and more scenic views.

Venford Wood Footbridge Completed

The bridge remains after flooding washed it away

We are delighted to announce completion of work to restore a vital walking route, following severe weather that struck in summer 2025.

In just two hours, torrential rainfall caused the Danesbrook, which carries water from Molland Moor and Halscombe Allotment into the River Barle, to rise by several feet, leading to extensive damage across the landscape.

One of the most significant losses was the footbridge at Venford Wood, a key crossing that links much-loved walking routes around Hawkridge, Anstey Commons, and the Barle Valley. Without this bridge, access to some of Exmoor’s most beautiful and nature rich areas is severely restricted. Its replacement is now complete.

How Dung Beetles can boost productivity

FiPL (Farming in Protected Landscapes) funding, administered by our ENPA team, has been supporting a range of nature-friendly farming workshops, in collaboration with the Exmoor Hill Farming Network and FWAG. These covered everything from hedgerow and woodland management to grassland nutrient management.

A recent dung beetle workshop, with national expert Sally-Ann Spence - hosted by Westermill Farm in Exford - introduced Exmoor Farmers and organisations to how these invertebrates can improve soil health and increase productivity.

It highlighted: The importance of dung beetles in our livestock systems and what they're doing beyond removing dung. How our native dung beetles can positively affect livestock, pastures, soil, carbon sequestration, methane emissions and farm biodiversity. The ecosystem functions of these economically important pastoral insects, their ecology, their threats and the potential practical changes in management required for their conservation.

In this video, Victoria Eveleigh from West Ilkerton Farm gives her thoughts on the workshop, invertebrates and farming...
