Expanded Paid Sick Leave

California just amended the Paid Sick Leave law to increase the number of days an employer must offer from three to five.

Starting January 1, 2024, virtually all employers must provide employees with a minimum of five paid sick days.

Employees can continue to accrue sick leave at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. Or, employers can front load the sick leave at the beginning of the year. But three days must be available to use before the 120th calendar day of employment, and an additional two days must be available to use before the 200th calendar day of employment.

If your city requires fewer paid sick days, the new State law will preempt the local ordinance.

Employers should review and revise their current policies and forms to ensure that they are compliant with this new law. Feel free to reach out if you want

De Castro & Morrow to assist with this process.
