Expansion of happiness is the purpose of life, and evolution is the process by which it is fulfilled...
A man of limited mind, busy in the world, is unable to appreciate the purpose of life. His mind is occupied with small things, and he can only create in a limited way... Many aspects of his life cause him to suffer, but his suffering is due only to his not using his full potential.
By not using his full potential, man is unable to fulfil the purpose of his life... He is not experiencing and expressing in his life the abundance of absolute bliss that he naturally possesses, the absolute field of creativity and power that lies within himself. He is like a millionaire who has forgotten his wealth and position and goes begging in the street.
All suffering is due to ignorance of a way to unfold the divine glory which is present within oneself.
Since one possesses the capacity for divine unfoldment, it is ignorance of the technique for experiencing the Being within oneself which is responsible for the misery in life.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, The Science of Being and Art of Living
The whole wisdom of the Veda can, in one sense, be summed up like this:
There is one thing. This one thing is All That There Is. This All That There Is is inherently good (of God) and always is evolving toward a more and more full expression of that good (God). I Am. Therefore I must be at one with this All That There Is. This means that I am inherently good (of God) and that I always am evolving toward a more full expression of that good (God).
Why don't I always know this? Because I allow myself to be identified solely with my relative world experience, my mind occupied with the 'small things' Maharishi speaks of above. I forget the wonder of life, and by extension, the wonder of my Self.
How do I correct this mistaken self-identification? By 'experiencing the Being within [my]self'. Through this simple meditation technique by which I transcend the relative world and am able to experience the place of Being that is right here, less than a breath away, and awaiting only my recognition in order for it to set about 'unfold[ing] the divine glory which is present within.'
20 minutes morning, 20 minutes evening, sitting comfortably in a chair. Simple to learn, simple to do. The benefits of it cannot be overstated.
If it's a practice you've learned but set aside, let today be the day you pick it up again. Today I will remember that there is more to life than what I can see, that this more of life is the source of every good thing and it is available to me whenever I become ready to look for it where it is: right here within me.
