August BCARM Plant Forum 11 August

Thursday 11 August 1pm AEST/3pm NZT

Theme: Myrtaceae ex situ collections – what do we have and how do we manage them

The Council of Heads of Australian Botanic Gardens Incorporated (CHABG) and Botanic Gardens Australian New Zealand Inc (BGANZ) will shortly disseminate a survey to botanic gardens and seed banks to develop a national living collections database of Myrtle Rust-susceptible plant species. CHABG and BGANZ will release the survey in July and promote it at the Global Botanic Gardens Congress in Melbourne in September 2022. This forum will present some case studies of gardens preparing and managing collections for myrtle rust, as well as introduce the survey and present an opportunity to ask questions.

Speakers:
  • Amanda Shade from Kings Park highlighting how they have prepared for myrtle rust in their collections
  • Rick Ackland from North Coast Botanic Gardens about how they manage their collections in the face of myrtle rust
  • Damian Wrigley and Brad Desmond will share the upcoming Myrtaceae survey for all BGANZ members to participate in.

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria re-launches VicFlora plant identification database

This week, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria re-launched its VicFlora database to help users identify plants more easily.

First launched in September 2016, VicFlora provides identification tools and information for all known native and naturalised Victorian plants. It is a free online resource available to researchers, scientists, and the public.

Now, the platform has even more features including updated distribution maps, ‘exemplars’ for Eucalyptus and Acacia (wattle) which are high-res images of perfect reference specimens including close ups of key diagnostic characters needed for identification, updated 'threat status' fields, a glossary, added definitions and more.
