Linden Hall Invites Community to Annual Vespers Service
Main Street in Lititz is filled with holiday decorations and lights, and the air is radiating with holiday cheer. What better way to start off the holiday season than with a traditional Moravian music service? On Saturday, December 14, Linden Hall is welcoming all community members to join us at our annual Vespers Service in the Moravian Church at 7:30 pm.
The
Vespers tradition is as old as
Linden Hall itself. With roots from Linden Hall's founder, the Moravian Church, the service is filled with Christmas hymns, bible verse readings, and a candlelight vigil. From 1746 to the 1970s, Sunday evening vespers was a weekly tradition that the entire Linden Hall community participated in. Traditionally the evening services would take place in the Mary Dixon Chapel and all students were required to attend but often parents and friends joined from the community. The music was provided by a select group of students who made up the Vespers choir.
While over Linden Hall's long withstanding history, weekly Vespers services dwindled to every other week, to once a month, and ultimately to once a year, the foundation of community, music, and spirituality remains. Today the Linden Hall community has far outgrown the Mary Dixon Chapel and has returned to its roots by performing Vespers services in the Moravian Church. Linden Hall Choir, Orchestra, and Hand Bell Choir members have been eagerly preparing for one of Linden Hall's biggest music events of the school year. Vespers always helps to ignite holiday spirit and good will, and in the spirit of it, Linden Hall would like to extend an invitation to all Lititz and Lancaster County community members to join us in this celebration on Saturday, December 14, 7:30 p.m. at the Moravian Church. All are welcome, no tickets are necessary.
