This weekend we come to the Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday—“Rejoice!” It is the moment in our Advent journey when the rose candle is lit and the church invites us to notice the joy that is already breaking into the world.
Our readings this week remind us why we rejoice:
Isaiah gives us a glimpse of God’s promised future—wilderness places blooming and weary bodies strengthened.
James encourages patience rooted in trust, like farmers who believe the harvest will come.
And Jesus, in Matthew’s gospel, points to signs of the kingdom already unfolding: the blind seeing, the poor receiving good news.
Together they remind us that joy isn’t the absence of hardship; it’s the presence of Christ in the midst of it. We live in the tension of what God has already begun and what we still long to see fully. Advent joy rises exactly there—in the hope-filled confidence that Christ is with us now and will come again in glory.
We see signs of this joy every week at Emmanuel: in worship, in the compassion shared among members, in ministries that serve our community, and in simple moments of grace. These are glimpses of the kingdom breaking in—quiet but real.
May God open your eyes to the joy already growing around you, strengthen your heart as you wait, and fill our congregation with the hope and peace of Christ.
