To some, winter means the beginning of a hibernation period, when we bundle up and do our best to stay warm and cozy. For others, it's time to experience the outdoors and enjoy the bright and crisp scenery. Whatever your typical January looks like, this year may be different and perhaps it's time to consider new ways to spend your time. While it is best to stay home right now, there are ways to explore your community and support local businesses while keeping everyone safe.
Explore the natural playground at Island Lake Conservation Area
Even in the winter, the new 1.17 acre natural playground at Island Lake is a local destination ready to be discovered. The outdoor space includes unique features like climbing structures and an obstacle course. As you stroll around, you'll notice the Indigenous design elements that were developed in consultation with the Credit River Métis Council. Add on a hike through Island Lake's dynamic trails and you've got the perfect outdoor adventure.

Town of Orangeville adopts new Tourism Strategy and Action Plan
In May 2020, the Town of Orangeville initiated the process of developing a five-year Tourism Strategy and Action Plan as a way to determine important next steps for the community’s short- and long-term economic development. The plan's creation follows the findings of the Town's Economic Development Strategy in 2018, which identified tourism as a sector of focus for future growth within the region.

Adopted by Town Council on January 11, the plan highlights specific assets throughout the Town that, together, create a compelling tourism narrative. It then defines how these can be most effectively utilized or enhanced. The strategy also identifies new and innovative approaches to attracting visitors, building upon established themes such as arts & culture, nature & the outdoors, and historic, small-town charm.

Four strategic priorities emerged:
  • Administration and Operations
  • Branding and Promotions
  • Tourism Assets and Experience Development
  • Infrastructure and Investments

A careful consideration of the impacts of COVID-19 is included in the plan with recognition that the first 12 to 24 months of implementation should be viewed as a rebounding period, as well as an opportunity to enhance the Town's tourism appeal.

Based on these priorities, an action plan with more than 70 key recommendations, timelines for completion and budgetary considerations is included, providing staff with a clear and realistic work plan for the upcoming five years.

Tourism-related businesses are invited to sign up here to receive quarterly updates on the plan along with resources to help support tourism in our community.
