Greetings!
My son graduated from high school Saturday. I'm really excited for him. Yet, as I write this, I'm filled with some longing. I remember the moment he was born, how I said a prayer to God, "Protect him, help him grow strong, let him pursue your purpose for his life and be all that you have for him." Through an active 18 years God has blessed us with many times to be together and grow together. Sure we've hit the gym our share of times (I can still out bench press him). Yet, fitness as a father and son has been so much more. I remember the time he and I took a helicopter ride together. We still watch the video I shot of Brent-Thomas, then just a young boy, looking out the window and smiling as we quickly lifted into the sky. He now is working toward getting his pilots license and pursuing a career in aviation. From the rugged shores of Maine and the snowy slopes of the Rocky Mountains to our own back yard we've climbed, run, explored, camped, worked and used every muscle to experience life together. All along the way we've talked and argued as only buddies can, we've laughed and cried together and I know how often we've turned to God in prayer together when neither of us had all the answers. When I take inventory of the few really close male friends I have in my life my son is at the top of the list. He has trusted in me and I've depended on him. Fitness activities have given us the narrative of life - the close calls, the injuries, the adventure, the goals, the victories. God has given us --- life! Not just the heart beating, lung breathing, body growing life but the "this is how life is meant to be lived" life. My son and God have taught me not just to live life but to BE LIFE. When you discover the depth of that reality your fitness lifestyle is transformed and your personal faith in God is as real as the blood flowing through you. Yeah - feel the pump!
