It's chaos! Richmond artist, Paul Germain presents Order / Disorder at Art Works. His Rothko-like paintings are a view of nature based on the Chaos Theory-the balance between order and disorder, both micro and macro.
Asiya Al-Sharabi brings Queen of Sheba to the gallery. Yemen is a challenging place for women to excel in their career. Asiya's subject matter documents women who socially are not allowed to show their faces in photographs.

The monthly, juried All Media Show enters its fifteenth season as Art Works celebrates another year of bringing art to the community. 7:30pm Start your Modern Richmond Week with a tour and discussion of the building designed by world-renowned architect Philip Johnson. Originally built to house WRVA radio, it is now home to ChildSavers, a Richmond nonprofit child services agency.
As part of Modern Richmond Week, Modern Richmond is partnering with the Richmond Development Community (RDC) on a tour of the recently renovated HandCraft Company building in Scott's Addition. Originally the Binswanger Glass Company factory, the building is a good example of Moderne-style architecture in Richmond. Binswanger & Company was founded in Richmond in 1879 by Samuel J. Binswanger. The company began as a builders' and painters' supplier and also carried a large stock of window glass, of which they were the distributors for the largest manufacturer in the world (1893) called Chambers & McKee Glass Company. The factory was later sold to the HandCraft Company and was used as their corporate headquarters and storage facility.

The nimble quickness of Tarantella provides a virtuosic showcase. With the profusion of steps and the quick changes of direction, this brief but explosive pas de deux typifies the ways in which Balanchine expanded the traditional vocabulary of classical dance.

The Chinese-born choreographer returns to set his fourth Company-commissioned work for our Studio Theatre audiences after the recent overwhelming success of his Lift The Fallen.

Dance legend Carmen de Lavallade spent a week with our Company dancers staging and sharing her knowledge of Portrait of Billie. Ms. de Lavallade originated the role of Billie Holiday with choreographer John Butler as her partner in 1959 and was recently announced as a 2017 Kennedy Center Honoree.
George Balanchine's Tarantella is based on a traditional Italian folk dance associated with the bite of the tarantula spider where victims seemingly were cured by frenzied dancing.
Ma Cong, the beloved choreographer of Studio One's world premiere Winter's Angels, is in the midst of his Broadway choreographic debut of M. Butterfly which opens October 7thin New York City!

Dogtown Dance Theatre presents the second annual Dogtown Presenter's Series starting Friday, September 15, 2017, through Sunday, September 24, 2017.
The Presenter's Series is a two-week celebration during the Fall season, which highlights the independent artists and organizations rehearsing and teaching at Dogtown. Antique Melody Show is a nostalgic journey into early-American, post-parlor era music that layed the groundwork for speakeasy and lounge divas of the 1920's 30's and 40's, such as Annette Henshaw, Billie Holiday and Ruth Etting. AMS also touts a few original tunes reminiscent of the same genre. The band is anchored by the stirring, nostalgic vocals of Marilyn Brown, who brings more than 15 years of professional stage singing, most notably with Spectrum - a Richmond based big band, and The Continentals - a high powered swing band. In this FREE interactive workshop lead by Doug Varone , participants will examine how to use time, focus, awareness, and identity as tools to explore the performance experience and build or enhance their current performance practice. Educators will gain creative tools for the studio, classroom, or rehearsal hall. Creative investigation will be the emphasis, with movement, creative devices, and performance skills being used to expand the scope of participants' artistry.
