Dear Friend in Faith,

Seven Sundays this summer, from July 7-August 25, 2019, we’ll follow a worship series called, Binge Reading the Bible.

This series takes its cues from our social obsession with binge-watching shows on Netflix and instead focuses on reading large chunks of the Bible all at once.

As we continue our series on Binge Reading the Bible, we’re looking at the large genres of scripture. There are so many different types of material in the Bible: letters, poems and hymns, prayers, laws and rules, parables and so on. The historical books chronicle Israel becoming a nation as well as a people with a religious identity and a distinctive faith. Here we have some of the most exciting stories in the Bible, like David and Goliath, Samson, and the battle of Jericho. But through all of its history, Israel’s greatest battle seems to be around faithfulness to God. The nation often falls into idolatry, with kings and leaders who worship fertility gods, violate the covenant and lead the people astray. In an agricultural economy, the promise of the competing fertility religions to provide abundant crops and rain was undoubtedly attractive and tough to resist. Like the other nations around them, Israel wants a king. But the larger issue is...

Join Vacation Bible Camp participants in a bottled water drive July 14-21 . Bring a case of bottled water when you come to Sunday worship on July 14 and July 21.
Campers at VBC will be encouraged to donate all week. Donations will be distributed after the July 21 services. Thank you for helping those on the street in the Phoenix heat.

Reflections from the Desert Southwest 2019 Annual Conference
The Desert Southwest 2019 Annual Conference brought together 400 clergy and lay delegates from UMC churches in the Southwest, June 13-16 , Sometimes the proceedings were tedious, but overall the delegates left feeling hopeful and renewed for another year of ministry. Pastors Dave Summers, Brenda Smith, and Christopher Wurpts were reappointed by Bishop Bob Hoshibata to serve another year of ministry at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church.   Read more of the delegates' reflections on our website .
Pray for Youth Mission Team
Join us Sunday at the 9:30 am worship service as we bless the Senior High Youth Mission Team. Please pray for the 26 youth and 12 adults attending the Summer Mission Trip to Costa Rica, July 20-27. They will be doing light construction, running a vacation bible school for children in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, and working with Ray Zirkel Ministries and our Methodist partner-church to pray with and visit elderly members of their church. 

PVUMC Celebrates New Staff Hires
In June 2019, the church welcomed two new members to the staff. New Connections Director Katy Engels, pictured here, leads the charge of creating a welcoming culture by educating, inspiring, and inviting members and guests to step into life at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church. Tan Do also joined the permanent staff in June as an accountant. He had been working as our temporary bookkeeper for more than a year.

Summer Sundays at PVUMC
Summer is here! Our summer worship schedule continues during July and August with two services offered each Sunday at 9:30 and 11 am. The 8 am service will return September 1. Read more on our website.

This Sunday, take your children to worship for Family Sunday. If you can help with Summer Sunday School next week or any other week this summer, email Rev. Brenda Smith. Safe Sanctuary and other training provided.

Timbrenauts Handbells on Tour
Timbré is a Southern California-based lyrical percussion ensemble, featuring handbells, flute, keyboards, and dance. Join us for a night of musical magic on Thursday, July 25 at 7 pm in the sanctuary. The group is traveling through Phoenix on their way home from performing at the Handbell Musicians of America’s National Seminar in St. Louis! Admission is free. Donations gratefully accepted.
