Find Recorder Players, Teachers and More with the ARS Online Directory

by Judy Smutek

The ARS General Directory, available on the ARS website to members and non-members alike, is a valuable resource to recorder players. The Member Directory provides the additional option to search for individual members’ names, and is available to logged in ARS members. If you haven’t explored it yet, we encourage you to test the General Directory and Member Directory search capabilities, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player. They provide detailed contact information for the people or resources you may be seeking. Both the General Directory Search and the Member Directory can be found on the ARS website homepage under the “Our Community” dropdown menu. The Business categories that appear in the General Directory search are available for members and non-members to use.

For best results, enter only your zip code and a radius of miles you're willing to travel. Adding any other parameters will limit the search.

Are you ready to join an ARS chapter? Use the General Directory to see if there’s a chapter near you. Are you looking for a teacher in your area, or a teacher who offers online instruction? Again, the General Directory can help you find the sort of teacher you're seeking. Are you simply looking for other recorder players in your area because you’re hoping to join or form a consort? The Member Directory enables ARS members to search for players within a specified distance from a location, whether home or away.

Are you planning a major move to a new city or state? Are you planning a trip that might include recorder playing? Do you travel to a different part of the country in winter or summer for an extended stay? Use the Member Directory to identify recorder players or find a chapter near the alternate location.

Find an ARS Chapter or ARS Members Near You

Anyone can find nearby ARS Chapters by using the ARS website General Directory map feature to pinpoint a location. Initiate a search by specifying a state or city, for example, and then use the "Business Category" menu to refine the display. ARS members can find other individual members by logging into the website and using the Member Directory. Searching directly from the map (pictured) is also possible.

If you’re not yet an ARS member, you can use our General Directory Search  to find Chapters, Teachers, and Business members near you. For best results, enter only your zip code and a radius of miles you're willing to travel.

If you live in a part of the country with no chapters in your vicinity, don’t despair. Some chapters offer hybrid meetings and welcome in-person and online participants. Chapter listings include contact information and often provide a website link for further details. And the North American Virtual Recorder Society (NAVRS), as its name suggests, is a virtual ARS chapter which hosts meetings and events online. NAVRS is the largest ARS chapter in the country, with over 200 members.

Look for a Recorder Teacher or a Recorder Orchestra

To find a recorder teacher, anyone can use the General Directory Search and select from one of two Business Categories, either “Offers Online Recorder Instruction” or “Recorder Teachers.” You can find eleven recorder orchestras in the ARS directory by selecting the “Recorder Orchestras” Business Category in the General Directory Search. Again, for best results, enter only your zip code and a radius of miles you're willing to travel.

Explore Workshop Opportunities or Go Shopping

If you’re thinking about attending a summer workshop, now’s the time to consider the options. Start with the General Directory Search and select the Workshop Partners business category, where you can search for a specific workshop or peruse the list. You’ll see contact information and links to the workshop or festival websites.

Maybe you’re shopping for a new or used recorder or a particular genre of music. ARS Business members offer recorders, accessories, and sheet music. On the General Directory Search page, select the category aptly named “Business” and the list of businesses will appear together with website links and contact information.

The ARS provides these resources to support and inform our recorder community, whether members are seeking fellow members, or anyone is seeking teachers, instruments, or group playing possibilities. Take a few minutes to check out these resources and see where your exploration leads you.
