Pro Bono Counseling Announces New Executive Director

The Board of Directors of Pro Bono Counseling (PBC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Maggie Gunther Osborn as the organization’s new Executive Director, effective May 27, 2025. Maggie will lead PBC through this important transition and continue its goal to ensure accessible mental health care for all Marylanders.

“Maggie’s strategic vision and extensive experience in social sector leadership and philanthropy makes her an ideal choice to lead the organization forward,” stated PBC Board President Eboni Barksdale-Smith. “Her expertise will be instrumental in strengthening our impact and expanding our reach in Maryland.”

Maggie Gunther Osborn is a seasoned leader with over 30 years of experience across philanthropy and the social sector. Most recently, she served as VP of Network Engagement at First Book, a social enterprise dedicated to ensuring all children have access to quality education. She founded her consultant firm MGO Partners in 1999 and continues to advise philanthropic efforts and institutions.

“I am honored to be chosen to lead Pro Bono Counseling at this pivotal moment,” stated Maggie Gunther Osborn. “For more than three decades, PBC has provided a critical service to Marylanders in need of mental health support. I look forward to working with our dedicated team, board members, volunteers, and community partners to remove barriers and ensure everyone can access the care they deserve.”

Pro Bono Counseling Celebrates Volunteers at Gratitude Gathering

On Wednesday, May 14, Pro Bono Counseling (PBC) hosted its annual Gratitude Gathering to honor the volunteers who make a profound impact in ensuring all Marylanders have access to mental health care. During the event, PBC also recognized generous supporters and community partners and presented humanitarian awards.

“Pro Bono Counseling has connected thousands of Marylanders with the mental health care resources they need and deserve for more than 30 years thanks to the dedication of licensed mental health professionals who serve as volunteers, as well as the unwavering support of our constituents and donors,” said PBC Interim Executive Director Roxanne Melgar, LCSW-C.

From Grief to Gratitude: A Story of Healing and Support

Grief and depression can feel overwhelming, but no one has to face them alone. This became clear to a man in his 40s who reached out to Pro Bono Counseling (PBC) for support after losing a close family member. Having previously worked with PBC clinicians, he knew firsthand the impact of compassionate counseling and wanted to continue his healing journey with a new clinician.

When a member of PBC’s clinical team called to share that a counselor had been found to meet his needs, his gratitude was immediate and heartfelt.

“I want to say thank you. Pro Bono Counseling is a wonderful program, and I truly appreciate all the work you do,” he shared.

His appreciation extended to every person involved in connecting him to the right counselor.

“I don’t know if this is just a job to you or something you’re passionate about, but you’re really providing a service to a lot of people that are out here hurting.”

At the heart of Pro Bono Counseling’s mission is a network of volunteer clinicians who are licensed mental health therapists committed to generously donate their time and expertise to support those in need. Their commitment ensures that Marylanders have access to free, high-quality mental health care. With more than 900 active volunteers, PBC is able to tailor its services to meet each person's unique needs, offering counseling for individuals, couples, and families facing life’s challenges.

This client’s words serve as a powerful reminder of the immeasurable impact these dedicated clinicians make.

“I’m thankful that you guys are around and thank you for all your help,” he said.
