October 2025 Network Updates

A Year of Growth, Learning, and Connection Across the CSU

NEW! Our 2024–25 annual report highlights how middle leaders across the CSU have continued to strengthen equity and connection as campuses navigate uncertainty around equity work. From expanding the Middle Leadership Academy and launching the inaugural Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Middle Leadership Academy to hosting new Communities of Practice for LGBTQIA2S+ student success, the Network has deepened collaboration across campuses.

This annual reflection highlights our collective efforts—through academies, convenings, and storytelling—to create professional learning opportunities that support CSU practitioners to advance equitable outcomes on their campuses.

Join Us Virtually on November 5!

Inspired by the passage of SB 1348 establishing the state designation of “Black Serving Institutions” (BSIs), we invite you to register for "Beyond Designation: Thinking Intentionally about Servingness in the CSU." This virtual convening will bring together CSU students, staff, including institutional researchers, administrators, and faculty to discuss the concept of servingness within the context of BSIs, Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Asian American, Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs).

Supporting Undocumented Students in the CSU

Recognized this year from October 13–17, Undocumented Student Success Week is typically commemorated during the third week of October. In the current sociopolitical context, supporting our undocumented students has become more important than ever.

With this in mind, we revisit our Knowledge Center memo authored by Jaquelyn Caro-Sena, Senior Research Associate at Education Insights Center (EdInsights). Her work reminds us that undocumented students in California are a multi-national and diverse community, representing students from across Latin America, Asia, Africa, and beyond. Caro-Sena’s memo calls on campuses to take a holistic, campus-wide approach, grounded in awareness, professional development, and advocacy, to ensure undocumented students feel protected, supported, and seen within the CSU.

ICYMI: Middle Leadership Academy Impacts at Sac State

This recent Impact Brief by Thad Nodine, Ph.D. spotlights California State University, Sacramento.

Academy teams at Sac State have driven equity-focused change through initiatives like transforming entry-level math courses to eliminate barriers, aligning supplemental instruction with coursework, and creating faculty toolkits and professional development opportunities. Sacramento State is one of the most diverse campuses in the western United States, where approximately 37% of students identify as Latine!

Note: This brief uses the term “Latinx” when referring to the student population.
