Salt Creek

Salt Creek is a stream or wash of the Armagosa River that found exclusively in Death Valley National Park. The creek is fed by an underground spring but is usually dry in most places. Salt Creek gets its name and salinity due to the flooding and subsequent evaporation of water that periodically flows at the surface. Part of Salt Creek runs with brackish water year-round and is here that the last survivor of Lake Manly resides; the Death Valley pupfish.

Salton Sea

Once a booming tourist attraction the Salton Sea is now nearly dried up and abandoned but not forgotten.

The accidental creation of the endorheic artificial lake called the Salton Sea was one of the motivating factors that led to the building of a series of dams on the Colorado River. In 1905 during an overflow of a crudely built canal, the Colorado poured into the dry desert basin of the Inland Empire. Without an outlet, the basin continued to fill and soon the Salton Sea was born.
