Explore the Story of the
Canary Islanders in Texas
After sailing from the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, to Cuba, to New Spain, and then a 1,150-mile journey over land from Veracruz, 16 Canary Islander families arrived in San Antonio de Béxar in March 1731. These families established the first civil government in Spanish Texas, and their names can still be found on streets and public buildings throughout the city.

The Canary Islands Descendants Association was created in 1977 to bring awareness and educate others on their ancestors’ impact on Texas and to preserve Canary Islander history in San Antonio. Watch members of CIDA share the history of the original Canary Islander settlers on our YouTube Channel.

Join us on September 18 for Austin Museum Day, when we will be celebrating Canary Islanders with activities for the whole family!

Artifact Spotlight
The 16 Canary Islander families each received land grants, forming La Villa de San Fernando. This plat map shows how the Bustillo family, descendants of founder Joseph Padron, divided their family’s grant — Rincon del Alamito.
