Get Ready for Lunar New Year (Jan 25, 2020)
|
|
2020 is the year of the Metal Rat, starting from January 25
th, 2020 to February 11
th, 2021. The Year of the Rat is the first zodiac sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle. Rats are quick-witted, resourceful, and smart but lack courage. With rich imaginations and sharp observations, they can take advantage of various opportunities well. In Chinese culture, rats represent working diligently and thriftiness, so people born in a Rat year are thought to be wealthy and prosperous.
Come down to the neighborhood this weekend and purchase your decorations, red envelopes, and groceries to prepare for this two-week long celebration!

Report Illegal Dumping
It’s illegal to dispose of any material or debris by driving it and dumping it on any street, lot, park, public space – or any publicly or privately owned area. The Department of Sanitation has two programs that provide awards to people who witness and report illegal dumping:
- Illegal Dumping Award Program: Complete an affidavit after witnessing illegal dumping. When the lawbreaker is fined, the witness is eligible for 50% of the fine that the City collects. If the lawbreaker challenges the ticket at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) hearing, the witness must attend.
- Illegal Dumping Tip Program: Anyone who tips off the City – so that we can catch an illegal dumper in the act – is eligible for a reward of up to 50% of the fine collected. The tipster’s identity remains confidential – so he or she won’t have to appear at an Environmental Control Board hearing.

In just eight weeks, on March 12, New Yorkers will have a once-in-a-decade chance to shape our city’s future. The 2020 Census will determine whether we get our fair share of the billions of federal dollars that support our city’s schools, Head Start programs, health insurance programs for kids, and our senior centers, in addition to job training programs our neighbors rely on to get ahead, and the help they need to pay the rent.

Restaurateur and celebrity chef Eddie Huang is calling out the racism surrounding the stigmas tied to Chinese takeout restaurants. Huang, who, along with television personality Jeannie Mai, is demanding Merriam-Webster remove the term “Chinese restaurant syndrome,” as part of a campaign for Ajinomoto MSG. The outdated phrase refers to symptoms such as headaches and dizziness that the dictionary claims “affect susceptible persons eating food and especially Chinese food heavily seasoned with monosodium glutamate.”
