Elected officials are urging the public to take normal precautions against illness, but not to let fears concerning coronavirus stop them from participating in the event. "It's really important in this moment where everyone is understandably worried about the coronavirus, we need to be factual, we need to be scientific, and we need to be calm," NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson said.

The Lunar New Year celebrations wrap up this weekend, and in New York City, the biggest party will be the annual parade in Chinatown. Lion dancers and other performers will fill the streets on Sunday, and 10-year-old Ivan Zhou is being put through his paces as he practices for his first performance. He is one of dozens of fifth grade students from PS 130 in Chinatown set to perform the time-honored dance.

Restaurateurs in Chinatown say their businesses are suffering because of the panic about coronavirus. They say that the neighborhood has been noticeably less busy, while there have been no confirmed cases in New York yet during the outbreak that has infected 28,000 people worldwide. The outbreak has provoked xenophobic and racist responses about the Chinese people and diaspora, including from those who push age-old and bigoted misperceptions of Chinese culinary habits.

To be eligible for the affordable units, households must earn between 40% and 165% of Area Median Income (AMI). Residents of Community District 3 receive a preference for half of the affordable apartments. Former site tenants of the urban renewal area receive an additional preference.

Unlike a strawberry shortcake, which originated from a sweet English biscuit recipe and is crumbly and heavier in texture, the Asian fruit cream cake typically uses a traditional lighter sponge cake base, which distinguishes itself from the similar-tasting French genoise in that it contains no added fat such as butter or oil.

After a fire damaged archives of the Museum of Chinese in America in New York last month, items feared to have been lost forever have now been recovered. Some of the treasured surviving pieces include original copies of the first English-language Chinese American newspaper in the United States and a Chinese typewriter believed to be the oldest one of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.

Just a week after a fire burned through a building housing a Chinese language school, some of its students are back to class at a temporary location nearby.
“This is such a lucky break for us,” said Dong Yang, the Chinatown Manpower Project’s adult education program director while standing in an austere hallway on the 7th floor of the Overseas Chinese Mission.
