Exposure Plus Opportunity Lead to Success for YMWIC Scholars

“We will only grasp the staggering potential of our time if we create on-ramps that empower all people to participate, regardless of background, country of origin, religious practice, gender or color of skin” ~ Robert F. Smith

MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Greetings, YMWIC Supporters:

As we look forward to celebrating World Environment Day on June 5 which serves as a major global platform for environmental awareness (addressed by Scholars' Community Service year-long activities) and Juneteenth on June 19 commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas. Not only are we celebrating important holidays, we’re also still excited about the celebration and success of our 15th Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet last month. A sincere thank you to our sponsors, donors, and over 400 attendees.

We believe so much learning takes place outside of the classroom. Daily life experiences may not offer our Scholars the unique opportunities we’re able to provide, for example, our annual five-day College Tours. When asked what they have enjoyed most during their time with the Foundation, many of our graduating seniors cite the college tours which help them to make decisions about their college choice and career paths, the joy they experienced when making a difference during Community Service events, and their active involvement during workshops and the Science Expo.

We’re proud of the success of our Program graduates--100% are high school graduates, while all of them will pursue post-secondary education matriculating at a four-year college, two-year community college, or focusing their training on highly-technical skills at a trade school.

Your support ensures a more robust community because of an ever-increasing educated workforce in professional fields and skilled trades. Remember, it only takes one person to change the trajectory of someone’s life. Maybe that person is you. Can we count on you to join us by selecting our information link, volunteer link, or financial donation link? Another option is to contact me directly.

YMWIC Varsity Robotics Team Wins Award for Outstanding Programming

The YMWIC Varsity Robotics Team competed in the Greater DC Regional Botball Competition held in Great Mills, MD, on April 26th. Over the course of the season, members of the team met at HQ during the Robotics SIG (Special Interest Group) meetings to design, build, program and test the robots. They also needed to document their process, design, code, and do outreach as part of their final score for the competition. The team brought two autonomous robots to the competition, which had to work together without any human intervention, to move pieces on the Botball Game Board. The Scholars had been working with the full-sized 2025 Game Board Table located in the Robotics Lab at Headquarters. Read more.

Featured Parent

Raquel Avery, Upper Darby Chapter

My son, Tayvion Avery, joined YMWIC in September, 2024. We chose to join YMWIC because it provides a special opportunity for students to obtain additional funding for post-secondary education. YMWIC supplies us with resources in applying for various scholarship programs. Additionally, YMWIC strives to assist every student in their strengths and weaknesses. My son is a perfect example of a student discovering his capabilities through the YMWIC Program. I've learned a great deal from Tayvion by simply observing his dedication to success in the Foundation. I've seen him actively work on improving his time management skills as he balances schoolwork, participates in after-school programs, and prioritizes his health. His commitment to growth and self-discipline is truly inspiring. Read more.
