Did you know that July is

Minority Mental Health awareness month?

Mental health refers to our emotional and social well-being and impacts how we think, feel, and behave. It plays a role in connecting with others, making decisions, handling stress, and many other aspects of daily life. Everyone has mental health, and it deserves your attention just as much as your physical health does.

Mental health issues are common – more than 1 in 5 US adults live with a mental illness. Mental health issues are treatable and often preventable, but not everyone has access to the resources they need. People in some racial and ethnic minority groups face more challenges than others getting mental health care. This can be due to many reasons:

  • Cost
  • Not having adequate insurance coverage
  • Challenges finding a provider from one's racial or ethnic group
  • Stigma or negative ideas about mental health

Everyone benefits when people from racial and ethnic minority groups can thrive. We all have a role to play in promoting health equity.

Health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. Achieving this requires ongoing societal efforts to:

  • Address historical and contemporary injustices.
  • Overcome economic, social, and other obstacles to health and health care.
  • Eliminate preventable health disparities.
