10th annual BUPD Day focuses on reducing roadway fatalities

MoDOT, schools and safety partners share safe driving messages

“Since launching BUPD, we’ve seen increased seat belt usage and fewer unbuckled fatalities, but distracted and aggressive driving continue to be major concerns. These next two months are critical in ending the year with another reduction and ensuring you make it to your holiday gatherings safely."

- MoDOT State Highway Safety & Traffic Engineer Jon Nelson

As Missouri marks a decade of the Buckle Up Phone Down movement, it also nears an accomplishment not seen since 2011: four consecutive years of declining roadway fatalities.

The 10th annual BUPD Day on Oct. 28 prioritized this goal by sharing messages urging drivers to use safe driving practices as we head into the holiday and winter season. MoDOT collaborated with various safety partners, schools and businesses throughout Missouri and more than a dozen other states to promote personal responsibility and safe behavior behind the wheel.

To date in 2026, 716 people have died in vehicle incidents on Missouri roadways, with more than half of those unbuckled. Distracted driving also remains a leading cause of crashes in Missouri. In 2025, distracted driving was cited in crashes that claimed 97 lives, though the actual number is likely higher due to the underreporting of distracted drivers.

Recent efforts such as the passage of the Siddens-Bening Hands-Free Law have helped, but distracted driving continues to claim the lives of too many Missourians every year. BUPD Day serves an important purpose to raise awareness of safe driving habits leading into the holiday season.

Last year, 144 people were killed in Missouri traffic crashes from Nov. 1-Dec. 31. With increased travel, holiday gatherings, shorter days and the potential for adverse weather, it is imperative drivers remain vigilant in the coming months if Missouri is to maintain the current momentum toward reducing fatalities for the fourth year in a row.

The Buckle Up Phone Down campaign represents a call to action for everyone to make the simple decisions that keep our roads safe. Accept the BUPD challenge and commit to always wear your seat belt and put down your phone while driving so everyone can work together to reduce roadway fatalities each year.

MoDOT shares locations of increased rural interstate speed limits

Following an extensive review, MoDOT has identified the rural interstate locations eligible for a speed limit increase to 75 mph as the result of a new law. An online interstate map shows the 325 miles of rural roadway along I-29, I-35, I-49 and I-55 slated for adjustment. As MoDOT crews work to update speed limit signs along these routes, drivers should follow the posted speed limit and adjust for road and weather conditions. Learn more.

First six-lane stretch of improved I-70 opens to traffic near Kansas City

MoDOT's Improve I-70 Program reached a major milestone as the first four miles of three-lane interstate from Blue Springs to Grain Valley opened to the public in each direction. This newly paved and expanded segment provides a glimpse at how the entire 200-mile corridor will look when complete. Occasional overnight lane closures may occur throughout the Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa project, which is expected to be completed by late 2028.

Keep first responders safe in a traffic incident: Slow Down, Move Over

Crash Responder Safety Week is Nov. 2-6. First responders play a critical role in managing traffic incidents. From EMS, firefighters and law enforcement to tow truck operators, MoDOT crews and more, crash responders put their lives on the line to aid victims and clear traffic incidents. Help them get to the scene safely and prevent secondary crashes: stay alert, slow down and move over when you see flashing lights of any kind!

Watch out for ghosts, goblins and pedestrians this Halloween

Treating everyone to a safe and happy Halloween is a two-way street. Motorists should slow down and watch for pedestrians, especially in busy neighborhoods, and never drive impaired. Parents and guardians should supervise children while trick-or-treating, look both ways before crossing the street and plan costumes with high visibility in mind, such as incorporating bright colors, glow sticks or reflective tape.
