'Tis the season for a safe and sober holiday

MoDOT asks drivers to give the gift of zero fatalities

We won't have a white Christmas this year, but we can have a safe and sober one. With increased holiday travel and nice weather in the forecast, MoDOT reminds drivers of the important role they play in keeping roads safe during the Christmas and New Year travel season.

Last holiday season, 27 people were killed in Missouri traffic crashes from Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day. There were 20 people killed in Missouri traffic crashes during the same time frame in 2023.

This year, MoDOT and highway safety partners are urging Missourians to do their part in securing a fatality-free holiday. Give the gift of safety this year by encouraging these simple actions to help keep everyone using the roadways safe: Buckle up. Phone down. Slow down. Drive sober.

Whether you’re driving through a work zone or coasting between holiday parties, committing to these safe behaviors will help save lives and keep Missouri moving forward in the mission of traffic safety.

If your holiday festivities involve drinking, be sure to plan for a sober ride. Whether it's a glass of wine with dinner or your uncle's "secret eggnog recipe" please remember: If you feel different, you drive different. Assign a designated driver, call for a rideshare or stay where you are - don't drive impaired. Make your New Year's resolution for 2026 a pledge to drive safe.

To help plan your trip safely, visit MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for the most updated work zone and travel information. Missouri’s strategic highway safety plan, Show-Me Zero, provides more information for how all Missourians can do their part to achieve zero traffic fatalities.

Transportation History - New electric railroad opens for Christmas

On Dec. 25, 1907, the Yakima Valley Transportation Company in Washington opened its first interurban electric railroad to the public. More than 1,300 people paid a nickel each to ride the streetcars along the three miles of track, which later grew to 44 miles. The railcar was eventually added to the National Register of Historic Places as the last remaining interurban electric railroad still in operation, with about five miles maintained for tourists.
