Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia contractor selected

ESS Team selected as best value Design-Build proposal

At its December meeting, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission selected The ESS Team as the best-value Design-Build contractor for the fourth project in MoDOT's Improve I-70 Program, which runs from Rocheport to Columbia. The ESS Team consists of contractor Emery Sapp & Sons with designer Parsons. More details regarding the planned improvements, design, schedule and traffic control phasing will be available at the upcoming public information meetings scheduled for early 2026. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in Spring/Summer 2026 with an anticipated completion in late 2029.

Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia is a $441 million project that will add a third lane to each direction and make other improvements to that stretch of Interstate 70. The team's winning proposal includes the following improvements:

  • A third lane in each direction on I-70 between the Missouri River Bridge at Rocheport and approximately U.S. Route 63 in Columbia, with all new 11” full-depth concrete pavement.
  • Improvements to the I-70 interchanges/intersections at Route J/O, Midway (Route 40), Stadium Blvd., Business Loop 70, Providence Rd., Rangeline St., and U.S. Route 63.
  • 14 new bridge structures.
  • New north and south outer road connections across Perche Creek.
  • The team has also committed to keeping two lanes of travel open in each direction during peak travel times.

The full Improve I-70 Program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville. The program is split into multiple projects, with three others currently underway and the rest to be contracted by 2029. Total completion of the corridor is anticipated by the end of 2030.

Missouri students invited to participate in No MOre Trash! contest

MoDOT's "Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free" trash-can-decorating contest runs until March 13 and encourages students to creatively decorate a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a litter-prevention message. Schools, or home school programs, are split up by grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12, with money awarded to the winning school in each category, as well as a grand prize. Find entry forms and more on MoDOT's website.

MoDOT hosts ribbon-cutting event for Improve I-70 milestone

Federal, state and local elected officials gathered together with Improve I-70 Program members and MoDOT leadership for a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the first five miles of completed pavement along Interstate 64 in St. Charles County. Crews with the Improve I-70: Warrenton to Wentzville project recently finished paving I-64 between Route K and Route 364, and plan to continue adding this third lane between Route 364 and I-70 throughout 2026.

Heads up! If you get stranded in winter weather, stay in your car.

Before the next storm, here are some winter travel tips. Watch forecasts closely and drive for conditions: slow down, brake and steer gently, buckle up and avoid distractions. Check the Traveler Information Map for road conditions to help plan your trip. If you slide off the road or are involved in a crash, stay inside the vehicle with your seat belt fastened and hazard lights on until help arrives.
