Missouri traffic fatalities decrease for third year in a row

MoDOT shares Show-Me Zero plan to help continue trend

“While this is encouraging progress, losing more than 900 people on our roadways in one year is still far too many. Every person, every life lost, is a family forever changed. We’re asking all Missourians to commit to making 2026 the fourth year in a row of declining roadway fatalities. Buckle up, put the phone down and slow down in work zones. These simple actions will save lives.”

Gov. Mike Kehoe

Missouri’s commitment to safer roads is paying off. Traffic fatalities have now been trending downward for three straight years.

According to preliminary data, there were 909 fatalities on Missouri roadways in 2025, a 5% decrease from 955 fatalities in 2024. Compared to three years ago, Missouri has achieved an over 14% reduction in roadway deaths.

Watch a video of the announcement.

This reduction didn't occur by chance. It is the result of investments in safer roads and the public making responsible decisions behind the wheel.

To keep this trend going, MoDOT is promoting an updated Show-Me Zero plan and encouraging everyone to get involved.

Here is how you and your family can help continue this positive trend:

  • When driving, give the road your full attention.
Put your phone down and avoid distractions. Remember, the
Siddens-Bening Hands-Free Law is now being enforced, which prohibits drivers from manually engaging with electronic devices.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
Ensure all passengers are properly buckled and help child passengers follow
vehicle safety requirements for their age and weight.
  • Never drive impaired.
Alcohol and drugs impair judgment, slow down reaction times and reduce a driver's coordination.
  • Teach drivers of all ages to practice safe behaviors.
For teens new to driving, research driver's safety and education programs like
Teens Taking Action to Prevent Traffic Crashes (TRACTION). For older drivers, ensure they're physically fit to continue driving and educate yourself on available options if it's time for them to hang up the keys.

Learn how MoDOT's Emergency Response keeps travelers safe

MoDOT's Emergency Response operators play a vital role in keeping Missouri roads safe. They assist fire, police and EMT crews during major incidents and handle tasks like emergency road repairs, debris removal and other measures to improve road conditions, often during off-hours. A new video on MoDOT's YouTube channel highlights how these team members work closely with other emergency services to ensure traffic safety and keep vehicles moving efficiently.
