Celebrating 100 Years: From Route 66 to Forward 44

Route 66's Centennial event highlights historic legacy

“Route 66 is more than just a highway. It's a symbol of the transformative power of transportation and how infrastructure can shape a nation.”

- Sean McMaster
Federal Highway Administrator

Federal, state and local leaders gathered Thursday to kick off Missouri’s Route 66 Centennial in honor of the iconic highway’s 100th anniversary. The event was hosted in Springfield, which is also considered the birthplace of this historic route. Learn more about the route's history on the Route 66 Centennial website.

100 years ago, Route 66 was designated as one of the original federal highways, running from Chicago to Santa Monica. Known as America's "Mother Road", it helped usher in business expansion, connect rural and urban communities and shape the culture and economy of the time. Today, its legacy lives on with the expansion and improvements along the route's modern successor: Interstate 44.

While the I-44 corridor has largely replaced Route 66, aside from some remaining historic designations, the interstate still serves as a vital east-west freight corridor across the state and evolves the 100-year-old vision of connecting the growing communities and industries in the region.

Springfield's ongoing Forward 44 project is moving Missouri forward with new bridges and wider, newer interstate lanes to help reduce congestion, improve safety and support freight movement along this critical national corridor. It also continues the route's history of connectivity by way of a new pedestrian underpass and trail connections, encouraging travelers to once again embark on new frontiers.

Work Zone Awareness Week aims to deter distracted driving

MoDOT, Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Associated General Contractors of Missouri held statewide events last week as part of Work Zone Awareness Week. Together, they reiterated the dangers of distracted driving and shared tips for motorists to help workers get home safe. MoDOT's busiest construction season on record is underway, so remember to slow down, follow posted speed limits and Buckle Up Phone Down. Watch the livestream.

April showers bring May mowers to Missouri right of way

MoDOT mows about 500,000 acres of grass each year, equal to 380,000 football fields. Starting in May, drivers should be on the lookout for slow-moving trucks and tractors with flashing lights indicating mowing operations ahead. Be prepared to stop or slow down behind a mower's "follow" truck, especially on rural routes, and obey no-passing zones. You can Report a Road Concern for grass and weeds blocking visibility along state roads.

AAA Distracted Driving event focuses on future of driver safety

Speakers at AAA's sixth annual Distracted Driving Awareness Day focused on the role young people play in improving driver safety and honored the winners of this year's BUPD High School Showdown. The contest saw 67 schools collect over 12,000 BUPD pledges from their communities. AAA Missouri detailed a 16% reduction in distracted driving incidents since the Siddens-Bening Hands-Free Law went into effect. Watch the livestream.

Civics lesson: State laws say to "Stop and Stay" for school buses

While school's in session, keep an eye out for school buses, children waiting alongside a road, or loading or unloading into buses. A school bus will flash its lights from yellow to red and then extend the stop arm before allowing children on or off. Stop arm laws state that it's illegal to pass a bus that's flashing its lights. Drivers must stop and stay until the bus withdraws the stop arm and begins moving. Learn more about School Bus Safety.
