Draft Statewide Transportation Improvement Program available

2024-2028 document is in public review and comment period until July 6th

The draft of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for fiscal year 2024-2028 was presented to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) at their June 7 meeting and is now in the public review and comment period. The draft five-year program includes funding from General Revenue – passed by the Missouri General Assembly – to widen and improve Interstate 70, fix low-volume minor roads, upgrade railroad safety crossings and more.

The MHTC will review the comments and the final transportation program before considering it for approval at its July 12 meeting.

The STIP makes available $14 billion of federal and state revenues for all modes of transportation over the next five years. Of the $14 billion, the draft STIP details $10.5 billion in road and bridge construction contractor awards, averaging approximately $2.1 billion per year. It also includes a record $3.4 billion in state General Revenue funded projects from the General Assembly subject to governor approval of the final budget.

The draft STIP lists transportation projects planned by state and regional planning agencies for fiscal years 2024-2028 (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2028) and reflects the transportation needs of communities across the state.

The program is also available on MoDOT's website. The formal comment period ends July 6, 2023.

First traffic on new Rocheport Bridge this weekend

Traffic on Interstate 70 and the Route BB interchange (Exit 115) in Boone County will be impacted the weekend of June 16-19 as westbound I-70 traffic is moved for the first time onto the new I-70 Missouri River Bridge at Rocheport. This detour is due to the demolition of the Route BB overpass and will require the narrowing of I-70 to one lane in both directions. Learn more.

I-270 joint press conference with Illinois governor

On June 13, Director Patrick McKenna spoke about the I-270 Chain of Rocks bridge construction partnership with Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, IDOT Secretary Omer Osman, Commissioner Bob Brinkmann and other local elected officials. Construction began in fall 2022 to replace the 1966 Mississippi River Bridge. Learn more.

Highway Safety Project Spotlight - Safety Town

Safety Town is a miniature city complete with sidewalks, crosswalks, streets, signs and building replicas. Children ages 5-7 can attend to learn about safety topics related to pedestrians, traffic, bicycles, seat belts, stranger danger and more. One objective is to introduce children to community workers and certified experts who can help in times of need. Learn more.

Today in Transportation History - June 15, 1953

This day marked the creation of the New York City Transit Authority, which is still the largest and busiest transit system in the country. This public authority replaced the New York City Board of Transportation in an effort to protect transit operations from city politics. The NYCTA currently oversees approximately 6,400 subway cars, 4,450 buses and 60 SIR cars. Learn more.
