Drivers in St. Louis area should expect major closures

I-55 bridge project will repair and replace multiple bridges

Motorists traveling on Interstate 55 in St. Louis city and county this summer should plan ahead and expect work zones along the way.

The St. Louis Bridge Project is a four-year operation that rehabilitates or resurfaces 14 bridges along I-55 between I-44 in the city of St. Louis and Lindbergh in St. Louis County. Many of the bridges are upwards of 60 years old and need significant maintenance or reconstruction to ensure that they remain operational and safe for future use.

In this situation, it is more efficient to repair or replace several bridges at a time to minimize the overall impact to commuters. This also gives the contractor doing the work the ability to efficiently manage the equipment and construction teams needed to complete the project.

Drivers can expect to have three open lanes northbound and two open lanes southbound near Green Park Road and two lanes in each direction between River Des Peres and Loughborough. Cyclists can expect day closures at the River Des Peres and Grants Trail bike trails, and extended closures at the Carondelet Connector, as crews work overhead.

MoDOT unveils innovative mini roundabout project

Many people already understand the benefits of roundabouts, but MoDOT’s Southeast District came up with the unique new concept of a mini roundabout to lessen speed and solve a sight issue while completing bridge repairs over Interstate 57. District Construction and Materials Engineer Benji Philpot discusses this innovative project in a video available to watch here.

Turn Around, Don't Drown during flood season

This time of year, heavy rainfall can lead to flooding, so please be cautious when driving or walking in flood-prone areas. It only takes six inches of moving water to knock you off your feet and two feet of floodwater can float your car. If you’re driving and come upon rapidly rising waters, turn around and find another route. Visit MoDOT's website for flood safety tips.
