MoDOT's Kansas City District details transportation innovation

Divergabout combines safety and efficiency of a diverging diamond and roundabout

Diverging diamonds and roundabouts have become two of the best ways to move travelers as safely and efficiently as possible. With more of these designs being incorporated into Missouri’s infrastructure, MoDOT's Kansas City team has built a few innovative interchanges that combine the two designs. They're called divergabouts.

This combined road design allows drivers to enter and exit the highway safely and efficiently without the need for traffic stops, which also helps relieve congestion and reduces the cost and effort of maintaining traffic stops, saving taxpayer money.

Two of these divergabouts have been built in the Kansas City area over the past few years to replace aging bridges and have been successful in streamlining traffic congestion and reducing accidents.

The innovation was highlighted in this month's Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSMO) Success Story video. In the video, Traffic Management & Operations Engineer Ryan Hale and District Engineer Chris Redline explain how the Kansas City District is using the divergabout innovation to benefit travelers in the area while saving taxpayer dollars. Learn more about how this transportation innovation is saving MoDOT money, as well as time for the department and the travelling public.

MoDOT's Northeast District tackles slide repair

A slide on Route U near Pickney was caused by shifting and unstable soil due to excessive rainfall. The road closed in May and was declared an emergency, accelerating the repair process. This week, crews began removing the slide and stabilizing the soil before reconstruction can begin. The project is scheduled to be completed by early November. Learn more.

Road to Rocheport details final construction steps

The I-70 Rocheport Bridge project reached another milestone. In early September, the final girders will be bolted in place for the new eastbound bridge. Construction crews will then build the last pieces of the road surface this fall. The bridge is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of the year. Watch the August Road to Rocheport update video for more details.

Buck O'Neil Bridge project reaches final stretch

In the August Buck O'Neil Bridge update video, Project Director James Pflum states the Kansas City project is about 95% complete. Final girders are in place, concrete is being combed out across the bridge deck and the new northbound river bridge is being tied into the existing road connectors. The video also details the project's history and expected completion dates.
