Contractor selected for third Improve I-70 project

Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa will begin construction this summer

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has selected the Radmacher-Ideker Joint Venture team as the Design-Build contractor of the third project in MoDOT’s Improve I-70 Program. The joint venture team consists of contractors Radmacher Brothers Excavating Co., Inc. and Ideker Inc., with designers Wilson and Company, Inc.

Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa is a $350 million fixed-cost contract that will add a third lane in each direction and make other improvements to Interstate 70. The Design-Build contractor team has also committed to extending the third lane in both directions nearly seven miles past the project requirements.

The project includes the following improvements:

  • Constructing a third lane of I-70 in both directions beginning just west of Missouri Route 7 in Blue Springs to approximately Missouri Route H.
  • Replacement of the existing I-70 lanes with all new full-depth concrete pavement.
  • Improved I-70 interchanges at Missouri Route D in Bates City and at Missouri Route 131 in Odessa.
  • 14 new bridges.

Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, and the team has committed to keeping two lanes of traffic open in each direction during peak travel times. The project is anticipated to be completed by late 2028.

Innovative traffic tool pulling double duty

A recent video from MoDOT highlights how a small change can make a big difference for traffic system operations and efficiency. In the video, MoDOT Area Engineer Brittany Mitchell discusses how the traffic signal detectors at major intersections can also count traffic, which prevents workers from risking their own safety doing the counts manually near busy intersections.

The best companion to a cap and gown is a seat belt

Graduation season is underway and so is MoDOT's construction season. Driving is a complex activity that requires extra attention, and teens have less experience on the road. Impaired and distracted driving, speeding and not using a seat belt are all reckless behaviors new drivers need to heed. Missouri has many programs that educate young people about safe driving habits.

Today in Transportation: May 15, 1905

The Alaska Road Commission was created by then U.S. War Secretary William Taft to oversee highway construction efforts in what would become the 49th state. In a few short years, the ARC upgraded 200 miles of existing trails and cleared the way for 285 miles of new routes. Many iconic Alaskan highways still in service are named after ARC officers.
