The Government of Alberta has committed to an Historic Investment in Transforming Continuing Care. I applaud this work and am excited to see it come to fruition.
There have been multiple analysis’ and reports on the current state and future of Continuing Care, commissioned over the last few years. Namely, the
Facility Based Continuing Care Review and the
Continuing Care Capital Program. Both of these documents outlined the validity and desire for more Small Home Care options. While the pandemic was catastrophic for many people living in traditional, institutional long term care homes, it also highlighted and showed the many benefits to the Small Home model.
Over the last year, I have been working with the Government of Alberta to help define the building specifications, operational best practice standards and staffing requirements for Small Homes. I have toured many government officials and administrators through our homes, and they were all impressed. We (those of us in Senior Care) were being told to expect, later this year, a funding stream and Capital Grant to build more Small Homes.
ExquisiCare intends to apply for several grants to build new Small Homes across the province.
Caring for our seniors in the most dignified way possible, is the right thing to do.
