Arthritis affects nearly half of Canadians over 65, bringing pain, stiffness and mobility challenges that can impact everyday life. The good news? With early action, supportive environments and personalized care, seniors can maintain comfort and independence.

In our latest blog, we explore:

  • How ExquisiCare supports residents living with arthritis

Fresh Air, Green Spaces, and the Joy of Gardening at ExquisiCare

At ExquisiCare, we believe that fresh air and time outdoors are essential for our residents’ well being. Spending time outside isn’t just pleasant, it has proven benefits for physical, emotional and cognitive health. Fresh air improves mood, supports better sleep, boosts vitamin D, and encourages gentle movement, which is vital for maintaining strength and balance.

One of the ways our residents connect with nature is through gardening. Whether it’s tending to raised garden beds, watering potted plants on the patio, or simply sitting among flowers and herbs, gardening offers our seniors relaxation, sensory stimulation and a sense of purpose. It’s an activity that sparks memories, invites conversation, and brings joy to everyday life.

To make the most of these benefits, we partner with a horticulture specialist who visits regularly. This specialist designs activities tailored to seniors’ abilities from seed planting and container gardening to sensory rich garden walks. With their guidance, residents gain hands on experiences with plants in ways that are safe, accessible and meaningful.

At ExquisiCare, time outdoors isn’t just an activity, it’s a cornerstone of how we nurture mind, body and spirit. Whether enjoying a morning coffee on the patio, planting spring bulbs, or harvesting herbs for lunch, our residents discover daily how fresh air and green spaces enrich their lives.

CTV Live recently visited one of our ExquisiCare homes for a special segment featuring our Community Leader and our Elder Guide. Together they shared how ExquisiCare creates a warm, family-like environment where seniors thrive.

Filmed right in the heart of one of our homes, the interview highlighted our personalized approach to care, small household model, and the deep connections between staff and residents. Viewers saw firsthand how our team supports residents’ dignity, independence, and well-being in a truly home-style setting.

This segment beautifully captured what makes ExquisiCare different: compassionate staff, meaningful relationships, and an environment where every resident feels at home.

Joyful Summer Days: Games and Good Times

This summer at ExquisiCare was bursting with colour, fun, and creativity! We hosted a series of special events that brought our residents and staff together for laughter, connection and unforgettable memories.

One day we transformed our home into a casino, complete with cards, games, prizes and plenty of playful competition. Another day, we turned up the island vibes with a Hawaiian Luau — colourful leis, island music, fruity drinks and even a little hula dancing. And when it was time for a touch of glamour, Diva for a Day gave our residents a chance to enjoy hair styling, makeup, nails and plenty of pampering.

Whether rolling dice, swaying to island tunes, or being treated like royalty, our residents embraced every moment. The best part? Seeing smiles, laughter, and new friendships bloom with each activity.

Game On!

Nothing brings people together like a little lighthearted competition, and our residents proved they’re up for any challenge.

We’ve been having a blast with our Horse Race Game, where cheering sections form as the dice roll and “horses” dash toward the finish line. Add to that shuffleboard, cornhole, and table curling, and you’ve got a recipe for fun afternoons filled with laughter, cheers, and friendly rivalries.

These games are more than just play; they’re a chance to move, strategize, and bond. Residents have been showing off their skills, celebrating each other’s wins, and even plotting rematches. The energy is contagious, and staff love joining in too.

Adventures in Our City!

This season our residents have been busy exploring and connecting with the world beyond our doors. Outings are an important part of life at ExquisiCare, giving everyone a chance to experience new sights, sounds and fresh air while building friendships along the way.

One highlight was our visit to the Muttart Conservatory, where residents wandered among lush greenery, colourful blooms and unique plant collections from around the world. The vibrant displays sparked conversation, memories and plenty of smiles.

We also enjoyed a sunny trip to Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park. Surrounded by trees and open sky, residents soaked up the fresh air, listened to birdsong and shared snacks and stories in the park. It was a perfect setting for relaxation and connection.

These outings are about more than just a change of scenery — they enrich life, stimulate the senses and create lasting memories. We’re already planning our next adventures!

As summer winds down, we’re already dreaming up new ways to bring joy, connection and a little sparkle to the seasons ahead.

World Alzheimer’s Month

September Awareness Campaign

This September, as we observe World Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, Dawn Harsch, President and Founder of ExquisiCare, joined CTV News to highlight why Alzheimer’s must be a priority in our community. In her interview, Dawn shared heartfelt insights into how dementia affects both individuals and families, and the importance of recognizing symptoms early.

Dawn also spoke about the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s and how awareness, through conversation, education, and support, can make a real difference. She encouraged everyone in Edmonton and beyond to take part in the fight: whether by learning the warning signs, supporting organizations like the Alzheimer Society, or simply offering kindness to those caring for loved ones with dementia.

At ExquisiCare, we believe awareness leads to action. Dawn’s message reminds us all that together, we can create understanding, provide compassion, and build a community where no one faces dementia alone.
