Shadow Buffet – Making Delicious Stories with Paper and Light!
Now on view!
|
PLAY - The table has been set for you in the centre of the gallery. We call it the "Shadow Buffet": you can help yourself to a cup of tea, a piece of moon cake, a bowl of bok choy. Using the food puppets, you can project more yummy shadows as you go around the table.
DISCOVER - On the far wall, use the light on your mobile phone to illuminate the small eateries. Direct the light to the paper buildings; get close to them, move away and come back again obliquely. Watch the new food worlds you are creating unfold on the wall!
MAKE - Use the material on the table to create more food puppets: try making one ingredient or a full dish. Bring your creation to the Shadow Buffet, mix your food with the other ingredients and get others to taste it!

Neon Vancouver Ugly Vancouver
On view until Spring 2022
In the 1950s Vancouver had approximately 19,000 neon signs – more than Las Vegas! While some thought that thousands of signs signaled excitement and big city living, others thought they were a tawdry display that disfigured the city’s natural beauty. This deep civic controversy resulted in a turning point in Vancouver’s history and a change to the city’s urban landscape.

Google Art Camera
The Google Art Camera, used in our partnership with Google Arts and Culture, is a robotic camera, custom-built to record cultural masterworks in gigapixel images. Comprising more than one billion pixels, the ultra-high resolution of a gigapixel image can bring out details invisible to the naked eye.
Get a closer look at the detail in artifacts such as this white silk Cantonese opera robe (C. 1900 - 1912). The costume is embroidered with a floral pattern, ranging in colour from blue, to pink, green, and gold. The neck, sleeve hems, side slits, and hem are banded with embroidery and trimmed with fur. Plain white-water sleeves extend from the sleeve hems.
