Statewide Summit on Paid Internships

State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, invites all CTE leaders, educators, and partners, to participate to the first Statewide Summit on Paid Internships on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at the California Department of Education Headquarters in Sacramento. Zoom option is available.

Amidst growing concern about rising crime rates, especially crimes committed by juveniles and young adults, it is more important than ever that we join forces to create paid internship opportunities that meet the aspirations of our youth. This summit will bring together leaders from education, industry, youth development, workforce development, city, and county sectors to discuss the launch of an unprecedented initiative to fund paid internships for students across the State that are connected to meaningful career pathways and comprehensive support services.

The goal for the summit is to design a statewide youth paid internship initiative that would have four primary components:

  • A paid internship, apprenticeship, work experience, or another type of work-based learning experience that would last at least one semester but could ideally continue through graduation or beyond
  • High Quality CTE coursework in the area of their career interest
  • Specially designed, culturally proficient college and career counseling throughout the duration of the program
  • An assigned mentor who works in the industry sector or field of the student’s interest

The Summit participants will help design the components of the program and enlist partners throughout the state who could support and provide opportunities in each of the major focus areas.

We are hoping to have participants join in person but are offering a virtual option for those who cannot travel to the summit.

To RSVP, please visit the Summit for Paid Internships Registration page at https://surveys3.cde.ca.gov/go/sfpi-registration.asp. Once your participation is confirmed, we will send you an email with the full logistical details.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in Adult Foundational Education

The American Institutes for Research recently published a brief exploring the current conditions, opportunities, and challenges of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in Adult Foundational Education (AFE).

Produced by the Equity in Adult Education Research workgroup of the Institute of Education Sciences-funded Collaborative Research for Educating Adults with Technology Enhancements (CREATE) Adult Skills Network, the linked brief further considers the use of technology in adult education and how DEIA is addressed within this context.
