Extreme Heat Advisory: Tips to Beat the Heat

The Governor has implemented the Extreme Heat Protocol starting at 8:00AM tomorrow morning (Thursday, July 27). The protocol will remain in effect until 8:00AM Sunday morning. Hot and humid conditions are expected during the next 4 days with highs in the 90’s and the heat index ranging between 95-105 F.

Residents may take refuge at our public libraries, senior centers and town pools and splash pads. Check www.westhartfordct.gov/leisureservices for locations and hours.

Other locations that are open and air conditioned include malls and movie theaters, to name a few. We ask that residents remember to check on elderly neighbors.

As always, the Police and Fire Departments will be fully staffed and prepared to respond in any emergency. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel 860-523-5203.

Here are some tips to keep your home cool:

  • Install window air conditioners and insulate around them.
  • Do not rely on a fan as your primary cooling device. Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort, but do not reduce body temperature or prevent heat-related illnesses.
  • Cover windows with drapes or shades.
  • Use window reflectors specifically designed to reflect heat back outside.
  • Use a powered attic ventilator, or attic fan, to regulate the heat level by clearing out hot air.

In extreme heat your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Extreme heat is responsible for the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards, according to ready.gov. Here are some tips to keep yourself safe:

  • Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • If you’re outside, find shade. Wear a hat wide enough to protect your face.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Avoid high-energy activities or work outdoors, during midday heat, if possible.
  • Consider pet safety. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to comfortable shade.
  • Learn to recognize the signs of heat illness.
